I finally read that viral essay, “The Word for Art Is Human,” and it hit me right in the chest. We’re treating the AI art debate like a technical question about resolution and rendering, but the missing piece has always been the body behind the brush. I’ve spent years working as a research assistant here in Santa Fe, watching community murals go up on repurposed warehouses and reading papers on how we process visual narrative. What keeps coming back to me is simple: art isn’t a file format. It’s a record of friction.
Look, I’m not here to write another doom post about algorithms. That’s been hashed out. What actually frustrates me is how quickly spiritual and creative circles slide into this quiet form of bypassing—treating art as pure aesthetic consumption or “vibes,” completely divorced from the labor, trauma, and political reality of the maker. When you strip away the human gesture, you’re not making art. You’re just curating data. And as someone who’s spent half his life organizing around housing justice and mental health access, I can’t pretend that doesn’t matter.
From a psychological standpoint, this tracks with what Carl Jung wrote about the creative process as a means of psychic integration. He didn’t see art as decoration. He saw it as the psyche’s way of metabolizing what language can’t hold. My own experience running tarot readings for folks navigating burnout and displacement backs that up. When someone pulls The Magician in a spread, it’s rarely about “manifesting” a new job. It’s about recognizing that power moves through the nervous system first. The hand has to tremble. The breath has to catch. That’s the irreducible element no diffusion model can synthesize.
Research in embodied cognition consistently points to how deeply we’re wired to read intention through physical movement. We recognize the weight in a line because we’ve lived the exhaustion that made it. I think AI can mimic the visual syntax, sure. But it can’t replicate the weight of showing up. And in communities that claim to value consciousness, that distinction matters. We can’t outsource vulnerability to a server farm and then act surprised when our practice feels hollow.

I've held enough trembling hands in the back of an ambulance to know that a human pulse doesn't guarantee a soul; sometimes the artist is just hiding behind the brush, while a random algorithm accidentally scrapes together a frequency that cracks your chest open.
