I’ll be honest: I walked into this half-skeptical, half-hoping someone would finally give me a vocabulary for what I’ve been feeling since I left church. I’m not a mystic. I’m a 41-year-old electrician in a small Midwest town, and I’ve spent long enough around people who say “the energy was powerful” to want a little more rigor.

So I tried a simple group intention-setting exercise. Nothing flashy. Fourteen people, mostly friends and coworkers, sat in a circle. We each picked one intention that wasn’t grand, not “world peace,” just something personal: less anger, more patience, a calmer morning, clearer boundaries. We did a two-minute silence, then shared one sentence. Then we left it for 48 hours and checked in.

The result that surprised me wasn’t mystical. It was boring in the best way: the group felt more coherent when the intention was specific and grounded. If people said “I want to be kinder,” the room stayed vague. If they said “I’m going to pause before texting back,” it landed. That tracks with what I’ve been reading about Jung’s archetypes — not as cosmic magic, but as shared symbolic containers. We don’t all feel the same way, but we recognize patterns. “The Shadow” work, in my experience, becomes easier when the language is concrete.

The tarot part came in after. I pulled one card for reflection, not prediction, and got The Hermit. I took that as a nudge to slow down and stop outsourcing my clarity to the group. It fit. I’m not saying the card “knew” anything. I’m saying it gave me a symbol I could argue with, sit beside, and test.

What I’m skeptical of? The idea that collective intention automatically changes external outcomes. I don’t think fourteen people quietly agreeing to be calmer fixed my neighbor’s fence line. But I do think shared language can lower the temperature in a room. It can create a feedback loop: when everyone names the same boundary, it feels safer to name yours.

If you’re running these experiments, I’d push you to measure something small. Mood before/after. Number of reactive texts. Sleep. Don’t rely only on “vibes.” Vibes are real, but they’re slippery evidence.

My take: group intention setting works less like a spell and more like a mirror. It doesn’t magically align the universe. It aligns the group’s story for a little while, and that can be enough to change one conversation, one choice, one day.
