I’m tired of asking Black and Brown pagans to explain their roots to white folks — what resources actually help?

I’m a 24yo paramedic in Brooklyn, raised religious, went atheist in college, and now I’m stuck in this weird liminal place where I feel pulled toward ritual, moon cycles, crystals, ancestor work, and I’m not sure what to call it.

I keep seeing “pagans of color” resources and I’m honestly a little frustrated because a lot of them feel like they’re made for people who already know the vocabulary. I don’t want a label yet. I just want something that meets me where I’m at.

I went to a local gathering once and asked if there was anything for people who don’t identify as “Wiccan” or “witch” but still feel drawn to practice. The answer was basically, “There’s a subreddit and a Facebook group.” Cool. I joined. Half the posts were about shop discounts, half were about how to spell a sigil, and one person spent 40 minutes explaining why a certain deity is “not for beginners.” I left feeling like I was trying to join a club where the entrance fee was a thesis.

What I’m looking for is more like:

    • a short list of books, podcasts, or zines that talk about diaspora spirituality without making it feel like a museum exhibit
    • communities where people of color can talk about practice without having to defend their ancestry every single time
    • resources that don’t assume you already know the difference between folk magic, ceremonial work, and just… being spiritual in a way that hasn’t been packaged yet

And I get it. I’m not trying to be the person who shows up and says, “Can someone just tell me where to start?” without doing any homework. I’m asking because the usual answer feels like a shrug. If you’ve found something that actually helped a beginner who isn’t white, isn’t already a “witch,” and doesn’t want to spend three hours explaining why their grandmother’s practices count, point me to it.
