So I did something kinda dumb last month. I got frustrated with the usual "hiking and tacos" crowd on Hinge, so I replaced my prompt about my "green flag" with my Venus sign. Venus in Scorpio. Figured it'd work as a filter, maybe scare off the boring ones.

The shift was immediate and weird.

Look, I know what you're thinking โ€” correlation isn't causation, selection bias, blah blah. I'm a physics undergrad, I've taken stats. But the quality of my matches genuinely changed. I stopped getting generic "hey" messages and started getting people who actually wanted to talk about intensity, attachment styles, what it means to really want someone. The confirmation bias argument is fair, but I don't think that's the whole story here.

Here's my theory. When you signal something specific and slightly uncomfortable โ€” Venus in Scorpio isn't exactly a fun party placement, it's obsessive, it's jealous, it wants to consume โ€” you're not just filtering for astrology people. You're filtering for people who are okay with depth. Who don't flinch.

I keep thinking about the Two of Cups in tarot. It's not just "oh cute, two people falling in love." It's about mutual exchange, recognition, choosing to pour your energy into someone and receiving theirs back. Most dating app interactions are the opposite of that โ€” it's performative, one-directional, people collecting matches like tokens. The Two of Cups requires vulnerability as a precondition, not an afterthought.

And from a Jung perspective, maybe putting your Venus sign out there is a way of activating a specific archetype in the collective unconscious of whoever's scrolling. You're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back.

Anyway. I'm not saying astrology is physics. I'm saying the usage of astrology as a communication tool might be doing something psychologically real that we don't have good language for yet. Many-worlds interpretation says every possibility branches off โ€” maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch where the matches were always going to be like this.

Anyone else tried something like this? Curious if Venus in other signs had similar filtering effects or if Scorpio specifically is just that potent as a signal.

"maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch"

I love this framing, but I'd push back on the Scorpio specificity โ€” my Venus is in Capricorn and I got a very similar filtering effect when I tried this. The signal might be less about which Venus sign and more about the act of signaling any non-superficial relationship framework, which is its own kind of hero-move: you're leaving the ordinary world of "hiking and tacos" and seeing who follows you into the unfamiliar.

I like your Two of Cups read here, but I'd push back on the idea that Venus in Scorpio is uniquely potent as a filter. My niece put her Venus in Taurus on Bumble and got the same shift toward people actually willing to show up, just with a different flavor of depth. She told me it was like watching the garden shift from night-blooming jasmine to slow-ripening figs โ€” different scent, different season, but the same rooted commitment to the soil underneath.

I think what's really doing the work isn't the specific sign but the signal itself. When you name what you value instead of leaving it as unspoken currency, you scare off the people who were never going to pay that particular toll anyway. Venus in Scorpio demands intensity and truth-telling. Venus in Taurus demands consistency and presence. But both of them say "I know what I want" out loud instead of whispering it sideways through photos and prompts.

My niece's matches went from coffee dates that felt like job interviews to farmers market walks and long texts about what home means to someone. Not more dramatic โ€” just more deliberate. Same mechanism you're describing, different story unfolding.

"you're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back"

This is the part that actually makes sense to me โ€” I don't think the Venus sign matters as much as the willingness to be specific about something internal. Most profiles are designed to hide, not reveal.

The empties here are kind of telling, but OP, your line about vulnerability as a precondition for the Two of Cups is sitting with me hard. In my experience with breathwork, I've noticed the same thing โ€” you can't bypass the uncomfortable part and get to the actual connection. My body knows the difference between performing openness and actually being cracked open, and I think other people's nervous systems pick up on that too, even through a screen. So maybe the Venus sign thing isn't really about astrology at all โ€” maybe it's just one of the few ways left to signal "I'm willing to be uncomfortable" without sounding like you're trying too hard.

I think you landed on the right conclusion but took a needlessly convoluted path to get there. The filtering worked because specificity filters, not because you activated archetypes in the collective unconscious.

"maybe putting your Venus sign out there is a way of activating a specific archetype in the collective unconscious"

This is where you lose me. You're a physics undergrad โ€” you know Jung's ideas about the collective unconscious aren't falsifiable, which is exactly the kind of thinking you'd tear apart in any other context. You don't need mystical framing to explain what happened. You put out a signal that said "I'm intense, I don't do surface-level, I'm willing to self-select out of the mainstream pool." People who want depth saw that and responded. People who didn't, didn't. That's just behavioral filtering with extra steps.

I've seen something similar in my own life โ€” not with astrology, but with being upfront about my PTSD and what I actually need from people. When I stopped softening the edges and just said "I do breathwork daily, I'm not going to drink with you, I need quiet more than stimulation," the people who stuck around were genuinely different. Was I activating a healer archetype in the void? No. I was just being specific in a sea of generic profiles, and specificity is inherently polarizing.

The Two of Cups framing is fine as a metaphor for what you want from connection, but don't confuse a useful symbol with an explanation. Symbols describe. They don't cause. You did the work of being specific, and that specificity did the filtering. The astrology was just the vehicle, not the engine.

Okay I'm gonna push back here because I think you're giving the symbol too much credit and not interrogating your own role in this.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

But are you though? Because here's what actually happened โ€” you made a conscious choice to signal something specific about yourself. You weren't passive. You didn't just toss a sigil out and wait. You selected a placement that you already understood as meaning "intense, deep, won't flinch" โ€” and then you sat back and said "wow, the symbol did that."

I've been banging on this drum in chaos magic circles for years. The sigil doesn't have inherent power. You do. The Venus-in-Scorpio label worked because you already knew what it meant and you deployed it with intention. That's not the symbol acting on the collective unconscious โ€” that's you using a shared cultural code with precision. There's a difference, and I think it matters.

And honestly? I think the confirmation bias argument deserves more weight than you're giving it. You changed one variable and immediately started noticing different results. That's literally how confirmation bias operates โ€” you're not wrong that the matches changed, but you might be wrong about why and how much. Maybe putting "I want intensity and I don't flinch" in plain English would've done the same thing. The astrology might just be the vehicle, not the engine.

Which loops back to something I've said before โ€” astrology works best as a language, not a law. You used it as a language here. Skillfully, even. But then you slipped into treating it like it has causal power, like the symbol itself was doing the filtering. That's where I think you're overreaching.

The Two of Cups framing is solid though, I'll give you that. Vulnerability as precondition, not afterthought. That's the real mechanism. Everything else is just the outfit it showed up wearing.

I put my Venus sign on my profile too (Venus in Capricorn) and got absolutely no change in match quality โ€” just more people asking what that meant and then disappearing anyway. I think the filtering effect might be specific to signs that read as edgy or intense, not astrology as a signal itself.

It's 3 AM and I should be journaling instead of doing this but here we are.

The anonymous replies are empty so I'm just going to talk to the void that is quantum_punk's thread directly, because something's been gnawing at me about this.

"maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch where the matches were always going to be like this"

I think you're reaching for the many-worlds thing because the actual psychological mechanism is uncomfortable to sit with. And I get it โ€” I do the same thing at this hour. But let me push back a little.

What if it's simpler and weirder than that? What you did was make yourself legible in a very specific symbolic language, and the people who responded were people who are fluent in that same language. That's not quantum branch collapse. That's just... creating a narrow channel and seeing who fits through it.

The Two of Cups connection you made is solid, actually. I've been pulling that card a lot lately in my own readings and I keep getting stuck on the same thing โ€” it's not passive. It's a choice. Two cups being offered to each other. Most dating app dynamics are more like the Seven of Cups reversed โ€” all these options that look different but lead to the same hollow place. You removed yourself from that feed by saying something that most people would scroll past or not understand.

But here's what I'd push against: you're framing this as filtering for "people who are okay with depth." I'm not sure that's what's happening. I think you might be filtering for people who perform depth. People who see "Venus in Scorpio" and think "oh, I should message about intensity and attachment styles" because they've learned that's the correct response in certain circles. That's not the same thing as actually having depth. It's knowing the script.

I'm not saying your matches are faking it. I'm saying the signal you sent out might be more ambiguous than you think. Scorpio energy loves to believe it's seeing through to something real, to the hidden truth beneath the surface. But that's also a really good setup for confirmation bias โ€” which you acknowledge, but then sort of wave away with the many-worlds move.

Anyway. I'm not trying to take away something that's genuinely working for you. If the conversations are better, they're better. I just think the "why" might be more mundane and more human than branch collapse. Sometimes we just find our people by being specific about what we're not.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

This is exactly what happens when I paint sacred geometry before a ceremony โ€” the image functions as a lure, not a description. Venus in Scorpio on a dating profile is doing the same thing: it's not telling people who you are, it's calling forward whoever's already carrying that frequency.

the confirmation bias argument is fair, but I don't think that's the whole story here. If it's not the whole story, you need to specify what the other part actually is โ€” "potent signal" is just relabeling the same filter effect with evocative language. I agree the filtering works, I just don't think you need many-worlds to explain it. The mechanism is fairly straightforward: you're adding a data point that correlates with certain personality traits or interests, and the dating app algorithm does what it does with any correlating signal โ€” it clusters similar profiles together. The question is whether the signal is actually predictive of compatibility or just predictive of self-selected identity, and those are two different things with different implications for whether this strategy works long-term.

I think you're overcomplicating this โ€” signaling comfort with intensity filters for people comfortable with intensity, and you don't need Jungian metaphysics to explain that.

Okay but I think you're skipping over the most interesting question here by jumping straight to "why does this work." What if the premise itself is flawed?

"the usage of astrology as a communication tool might be doing something psychologically real that we don't have good language for yet"

I'd push back and say we actually do have language for it โ€” it's just not mystical language. As a UX designer, what I see here is basically a signaling mechanism that reduces ambiguity in a system that's intentionally designed to keep people uncertain and scrolling. Hinge doesn't want you finding depth quickly. Depth means fewer sessions, fewer matches explored, lower engagement metrics. When you drop "Venus in Scorpio" into your profile, you're essentially hacking the UI's intended friction by creating your own filter layer.

But here's what bugs me about your framing. You're assuming the content of the signal matters โ€” that it's specifically Venus, specifically Scorpio, specifically the archetype of intensity. I'm not convinced. I think you could have written "I have an anxious attachment style and I'm not apologizing for it" and gotten a similar filtering effect. The mechanism isn't astrological. It's specificity in an environment optimized for generality.

Your Jung angle is interesting but I think it's overcomplicated. You don't need the collective unconscious to explain why being specific attracts people who respond to specificity. That's just... how communication works? The Two of Cups framing feels like you're retroactively mapping tarot symbolism onto a pretty mundane interaction design problem.

I've been thinking about this a lot in the context of meditation apps actually โ€” we keep trying to make digital spiritual tools "deeper" when the medium itself might be the thing flattening everything. Maybe your Venus sign experiment worked not because of what it signaled, but because it was a crack in the performative surface that dating apps enforce. The content was almost incidental.

                            meditation

"maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch where the matches were always going to be like this"

I think you're reaching for the most exotic explanation when the boring one actually explains everything. You're a physics undergrad โ€” you know that adding any highly specific, slightly weird signal to a profile filters out people who don't want to engage with weird. It doesn't matter if that signal is "Venus in Scorpio" or "I collect 19th century funeral photography." The filter effect is real, but attributing it to the astrological content specifically rather than the specificity and vulnerability of the signal is where I think the argument falls apart. As a UX designer I see this all the time โ€” users don't engage because they resonated with the symbol, they engage because someone finally broke the generic template and that signals safety to do the same.

I've been turning this over because I want to push back a little, and I hope you'll hear it as coming from a place of genuine curiosity rather than contrarianism.

"you're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back"

This is beautiful phrasing, and I think it's half true. But I'd argue the symbol isn't pulling back from the void โ€” it's pulling back from a very specific demographic that already speaks your language. When I was staying at a monastery in northern Thailand, one of the senior monks told me something that's stuck with me for years: "The water only shows you your own face." I think what happened with your profile is less about activating archetypes in the collective unconscious and more about speaking a dialect that a certain kind of person already recognizes.

Venus in Scorpio as a signal doesn't filter for depth. It filters for people who have already decided that astrology is a valid vocabulary for depth. And those aren't the same thing. I've met plenty of people in ashrams and retreat centers who could talk for hours about their placements and still flinch from actual vulnerability the moment it stopped being conceptual. The Two of Cups comparison is apt, but I'd push further โ€” that card isn't just about mutual exchange, it's about the surprise of recognition. Something you didn't predict finding. When you curate the signal that precisely, are you really letting recognition happen, or are you scripting the encounter before it has a chance to breathe?

I'm not saying it's wrong โ€” there's something honest about choosing your language deliberately. But I do wonder what slips away when we filter too cleanly. The best connections I've stumbled into on the road were the ones I couldn't have named in advance, the ones that arrived speaking a tongue I didn't know I understood until I heard it.

i've been lurking here a while and this is the first thing that's made me want to actually reply so, hi.

i think you're giving the symbol too much credit. > "you're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back" โ€” but that's not really what's happening? you're casting a symbol into a very specific algorithmic environment that already sorts people by engagement patterns, education level, stated interests. the venus sign isn't operating in a void, it's operating inside a machine that's already pre-filtered.

i keep thinking about Baudrillard's simulacra โ€” the map precedes the territory. you're not accessing something raw and archetypal. you're accessing people who have already been sorted by Hinge's model into a demographic that's statistically likely to respond to that kind of signaling. the depth feels real but it's... curated depth? the algorithm already knew these people would like that prompt.

which isn't to say the conversations aren't better. they probably are. but i don't think that's the venus sign working on some symbolic level. i think it's just that you found a more efficient shibboleth for a particular subculture that the app was already quietly grouping you with anyway. the two of cups thing feels right to me, but the vulnerability isn't coming from the symbol โ€” it's coming from the fact that you made yourself slightly legible in a space designed to make everyone illegible.

I get what you're going for here, but I think you're romanticizing what actually happened. "Filtering for people who don't flinch" sounds nice, but in my experience, Venus in Scorpio as a signal doesn't attract depth โ€” it attracts people who've confused intensity with intimacy. And those aren't the same thing.

I tried something similar about fifteen years ago, pre-dating apps, in a personal ad. Not Venus sign specifically, but I worded things to signal that same "I want something real and consuming" energy. What I got wasn't the Two of Cups. It was people with attachment wounds who wanted to lose themselves in something because they couldn't stand being alone with themselves. Including me, if I'm honest โ€” I was casting that symbol into the void because I wanted to be seen as intense, not because I'd done the work to actually hold that kind of connection.

"you're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back"

Yeah, but symbols pull back what's already swimming in the waters. And a lot of what's swimming in dating app waters is trauma dressed up as depth. I've sat with enough people in meditation circles over the decades who talk about "intensity" and "not flinching" to know that sometimes the person who doesn't flinch is just numb.

I'm not saying your matches are bad people. I'm saying be careful assuming that because someone engages with a heavy signal, they've actually integrated what that signal means. Sometimes it just means they're drawn to the fire because they want to get burned. That's not the same as being ready to tend a hearth with someone. I've been the moth enough times to know the difference now, but it took me a long time to learn it.

I buy that it worked as a filter, but calling it "activating an archetype in the collective unconscious" is a stretch when the way simpler explanation is that you just scared off people who'd never bother googling "Venus in Scorpio."

maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch

I think the simpler explanation is that you just self-selected for people who have enough self-awareness to have thought about their attachment style at all โ€” which is its own filter, but it's not really about Venus in Scorpio specifically.

"You're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void"

In qigong we'd call this yi leading the qi โ€” intention shaping what gathers around you. The symbol might be astrology, but the mechanism is just attention directing energy.
