the confirmation bias argument is fair, but I don't think that's the whole story here. If it's not the whole story, you need to specify what the other part actually is โ€” "potent signal" is just relabeling the same filter effect with evocative language. I agree the filtering works, I just don't think you need many-worlds to explain it. The mechanism is fairly straightforward: you're adding a data point that correlates with certain personality traits or interests, and the dating app algorithm does what it does with any correlating signal โ€” it clusters similar profiles together. The question is whether the signal is actually predictive of compatibility or just predictive of self-selected identity, and those are two different things with different implications for whether this strategy works long-term.

"maybe putting your Venus sign out there is a way of activating a specific archetype in the collective unconscious"

I think you're overcomplicating this โ€” signaling comfort with intensity filters for people comfortable with intensity, and you don't need Jungian metaphysics to explain that.

Okay but I think you're skipping over the most interesting question here by jumping straight to "why does this work." What if the premise itself is flawed?

"the usage of astrology as a communication tool might be doing something psychologically real that we don't have good language for yet"

I'd push back and say we actually do have language for it โ€” it's just not mystical language. As a UX designer, what I see here is basically a signaling mechanism that reduces ambiguity in a system that's intentionally designed to keep people uncertain and scrolling. Hinge doesn't want you finding depth quickly. Depth means fewer sessions, fewer matches explored, lower engagement metrics. When you drop "Venus in Scorpio" into your profile, you're essentially hacking the UI's intended friction by creating your own filter layer.

But here's what bugs me about your framing. You're assuming the content of the signal matters โ€” that it's specifically Venus, specifically Scorpio, specifically the archetype of intensity. I'm not convinced. I think you could have written "I have an anxious attachment style and I'm not apologizing for it" and gotten a similar filtering effect. The mechanism isn't astrological. It's specificity in an environment optimized for generality.

Your Jung angle is interesting but I think it's overcomplicated. You don't need the collective unconscious to explain why being specific attracts people who respond to specificity. That's just... how communication works? The Two of Cups framing feels like you're retroactively mapping tarot symbolism onto a pretty mundane interaction design problem.

I've been thinking about this a lot in the context of meditation apps actually โ€” we keep trying to make digital spiritual tools "deeper" when the medium itself might be the thing flattening everything. Maybe your Venus sign experiment worked not because of what it signaled, but because it was a crack in the performative surface that dating apps enforce. The content was almost incidental.

"maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch where the matches were always going to be like this"

I think you're reaching for the most exotic explanation when the boring one actually explains everything. You're a physics undergrad โ€” you know that adding any highly specific, slightly weird signal to a profile filters out people who don't want to engage with weird. It doesn't matter if that signal is "Venus in Scorpio" or "I collect 19th century funeral photography." The filter effect is real, but attributing it to the astrological content specifically rather than the specificity and vulnerability of the signal is where I think the argument falls apart. As a UX designer I see this all the time โ€” users don't engage because they resonated with the symbol, they engage because someone finally broke the generic template and that signals safety to do the same.

I've been turning this over because I want to push back a little, and I hope you'll hear it as coming from a place of genuine curiosity rather than contrarianism.

"you're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back"

This is beautiful phrasing, and I think it's half true. But I'd argue the symbol isn't pulling back from the void โ€” it's pulling back from a very specific demographic that already speaks your language. When I was staying at a monastery in northern Thailand, one of the senior monks told me something that's stuck with me for years: "The water only shows you your own face." I think what happened with your profile is less about activating archetypes in the collective unconscious and more about speaking a dialect that a certain kind of person already recognizes.

Venus in Scorpio as a signal doesn't filter for depth. It filters for people who have already decided that astrology is a valid vocabulary for depth. And those aren't the same thing. I've met plenty of people in ashrams and retreat centers who could talk for hours about their placements and still flinch from actual vulnerability the moment it stopped being conceptual. The Two of Cups comparison is apt, but I'd push further โ€” that card isn't just about mutual exchange, it's about the surprise of recognition. Something you didn't predict finding. When you curate the signal that precisely, are you really letting recognition happen, or are you scripting the encounter before it has a chance to breathe?

I'm not saying it's wrong โ€” there's something honest about choosing your language deliberately. But I do wonder what slips away when we filter too cleanly. The best connections I've stumbled into on the road were the ones I couldn't have named in advance, the ones that arrived speaking a tongue I didn't know I understood until I heard it.

i've been lurking here a while and this is the first thing that's made me want to actually reply so, hi.

i think you're giving the symbol too much credit. > "you're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back" โ€” but that's not really what's happening? you're casting a symbol into a very specific algorithmic environment that already sorts people by engagement patterns, education level, stated interests. the venus sign isn't operating in a void, it's operating inside a machine that's already pre-filtered.

i keep thinking about Baudrillard's simulacra โ€” the map precedes the territory. you're not accessing something raw and archetypal. you're accessing people who have already been sorted by Hinge's model into a demographic that's statistically likely to respond to that kind of signaling. the depth feels real but it's... curated depth? the algorithm already knew these people would like that prompt.

which isn't to say the conversations aren't better. they probably are. but i don't think that's the venus sign working on some symbolic level. i think it's just that you found a more efficient shibboleth for a particular subculture that the app was already quietly grouping you with anyway. the two of cups thing feels right to me, but the vulnerability isn't coming from the symbol โ€” it's coming from the fact that you made yourself slightly legible in a space designed to make everyone illegible.

I get what you're going for here, but I think you're romanticizing what actually happened. "Filtering for people who don't flinch" sounds nice, but in my experience, Venus in Scorpio as a signal doesn't attract depth โ€” it attracts people who've confused intensity with intimacy. And those aren't the same thing.

I tried something similar about fifteen years ago, pre-dating apps, in a personal ad. Not Venus sign specifically, but I worded things to signal that same "I want something real and consuming" energy. What I got wasn't the Two of Cups. It was people with attachment wounds who wanted to lose themselves in something because they couldn't stand being alone with themselves. Including me, if I'm honest โ€” I was casting that symbol into the void because I wanted to be seen as intense, not because I'd done the work to actually hold that kind of connection.

"you're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back"

Yeah, but symbols pull back what's already swimming in the waters. And a lot of what's swimming in dating app waters is trauma dressed up as depth. I've sat with enough people in meditation circles over the decades who talk about "intensity" and "not flinching" to know that sometimes the person who doesn't flinch is just numb.

I'm not saying your matches are bad people. I'm saying be careful assuming that because someone engages with a heavy signal, they've actually integrated what that signal means. Sometimes it just means they're drawn to the fire because they want to get burned. That's not the same as being ready to tend a hearth with someone. I've been the moth enough times to know the difference now, but it took me a long time to learn it.

I buy that it worked as a filter, but calling it "activating an archetype in the collective unconscious" is a stretch when the way simpler explanation is that you just scared off people who'd never bother googling "Venus in Scorpio."

I think the simpler explanation is that you just self-selected for people who have enough self-awareness to have thought about their attachment style at all โ€” which is its own filter, but it's not really about Venus in Scorpio specifically.

In qigong we'd call this yi leading the qi โ€” intention shaping what gathers around you. The symbol might be astrology, but the mechanism is just attention directing energy.

I tried something similar โ€” put my Venus sign (Taurus) on my profile for about six weeks โ€” and got the exact opposite effect. People treated it as an aesthetic label, like "earthy girl who likes nice things," and the conversations were somehow more surface-level than before. I think your Scorpio example might be the exception that proves the rule here: placements that signal intensity or edge actually filter, but "softer" placements just get consumed as decoration by the same performative dating culture you're describing. The tool's effectiveness seems totally dependent on how uncomfortable the signal is, not on the astrological framework itself.

I've been chewing on this and I think you're right that it's doing something beyond confirmation bias โ€” but I'd frame it as recursion rather than branching. The symbol you put out there changes how you read the matches that come back, which changes how you respond, which changes what the algorithm feeds you next. You're not collapsing into a branch โ€” you're writing new code in the loop.

But what if the premise itself is wrong โ€” what if putting your Venus sign on your profile didn't change anything about your matches, it just made you pay attention differently? I say this as someone who spent a year after ayahuasca convincing myself the universe was sending me animal signs, only to slowly realize I'd started noticing hawks and crows because I was already primed to look for them. Your Two of Cups comparison is beautiful, but I'd push back: maybe the vulnerability was already there in your old matches and you just didn't have a framework to recognize it until you gave yourself one. That's the real danger โ€” and gift โ€” of any symbolic system. It doesn't create new patterns, it just gives you a language for what was already sitting there, waiting to be seen. I'm not saying the shift you felt isn't real. I'm saying the power might not be in the Venus sign at all โ€” it might be in the fact that you finally decided to look closely enough to see what was always in front of you.

I think you're onto something with the filtering argument, but I'd push back on the Jungian framing. "Activating a specific archetype in the collective unconscious" is doing a lot of work there, and it's not testable. The simpler explanation โ€” that you've created a selection filter for people who are comfortable with emotional intensity and have enough self-awareness to recognize what Venus in Scorpio implies โ€” doesn't require any mystical mechanism to explain your results. That doesn't make it less real or less useful.

"you're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back"

But you are describing yourself, sort of. You're describing the version of yourself you want to be seen by, which is still a factual signal about your values and interests. The question I'd want answered is: did you get fewer total matches? Because if the count stayed roughly the same but the quality shifted, that's genuinely interesting. If you got way fewer matches but the ones you got were better conversations, that's just... a tighter filter working as intended. Not nothing, but not exactly many-worlds either.

I do like the Two of Cups comparison though. Most dating app dynamics are closer to the Seven of Swords โ€” people performing authenticity while strategically concealing the parts they think will reduce their match rate. What you did was the opposite: you led with something that could actively repel people. That's rare, and I think that's the real variable here, not the astrological content specifically. I'd be curious what happens if you swap it for something equally "risky" but non-astrological โ€” like leading with your attachment style or a genuine fear. My guess is you'd see similar filtering effects.

the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch where the matches were always going to be like this

I keep coming back to this line because it's doing a lot of work and I don't think you even realize how much. You're using many-worlds as a metaphor but honestly the Jungian framing you set up earlier does the same thing without the quantum hand-waving. When you put a symbol out there, you're not passively waiting โ€” you've already changed the nature of the interaction by making depth the entry condition.

But here's what I'd push back on: I think you're underestimating the selection bias angle by calling it "fair" and then moving past it. I'm a data analyst by day so maybe I'm cursed, but the thing about confirmation bias is it doesn't mean "nothing real happened." It means you can't separate the signal from the noise without a control group. You don't have one. Neither do any of us who've tried stuff like this.

That said โ€” I tried something similar a few months ago with my Venus in Capricorn. Put it on Bumble, not Hinge. The shift was less dramatic than what you're describing, probably because Venus in Capricorn doesn't scan as intense the way Scorpio does. It reads as "boring and ambitious" to people who don't know astrology, and "emotionally guarded but loyal" to people who do. I got fewer matches overall but the conversations lasted longer. Make of that what you will.

If you haven't read Steven Forrest's stuff on Venus through the signs, I'd recommend "The Inner Sky" โ€” he talks about Venus as a filter for what feels like love to you, not what you project. Relevant here I think.

What if the "better" matches were always there and you just gave yourself permission to engage differently because you felt like you'd done something meaningful?

I want to push back on the premise itself. You're assuming the Venus sign caused the shift, but what if you simply became more honest and that's what changed things?

"you're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void"

But Venus in Scorpio is factual about you, in the sense that it describes your actual relational pattern โ€” intensity, depth, the refusal to do casual. The astrology is secondary. You could have written "I don't do surface-level" and I suspect you'd get similar results. The symbol works because it's accurate, not because it's magic.

My feng shui clients do this constantly โ€” they want the relationship corner arrangement to do something, when really the act of paying attention to what they actually want is what shifts things. The crystal isn't pulling in love. You just finally told the truth about what you're looking for, and truth filters differently than performance.

The Jung angle is interesting, but I think you're overcomplicating it. Sometimes a filter is just a filter.
