Look, I’m 46, they/them, and I spend my days patching up people in Eugene while trying to patch up my own head. After years in evangelical circles, I’m currently in that messy deconstruction phase where nothing feels quite right, so I’ve started using tarot, meditation, and Jungian archetypes to find a new vocabulary for what I’m experiencing. I’m also deeply drawn to CosmicCurrents, MysticScience, and the whole CrystalEnergy scene, even if I’m slowly realizing that buying another amethyst doesn’t actually heal my nervous system.

When it comes to spiritual gift exchanges, I’ve noticed most folks default to crystals, sage, or overpriced candles. Honestly? I’d rather trade symbols. A deck of tarot cards, a handwritten note channeling a specific archetype, or even a small ritual object tied to a psychological concept—that’s the exchange that actually resonates with me.

Jung talked about how symbols bypass the conscious mind and speak directly to the unconscious. When I give a tarot card as a gift, I’m not just handing over cardboard and ink. I’m offering a mirror. If I gift The Magician, it’s about creative agency; The Hierophant speaks to tradition and structure; The Fool is all about stepping into the unknown. It’s a literal exchange of meaning, not merchandise.

I know I sound like a walking textbook, and honestly, I probably am. My paramedic training makes me obsess over practicality, so when friends try to gift me another quartz cluster, I just smile and hand them a card instead. There’s something quietly powerful about trading symbols—it cuts through the noise of consumer spirituality and gets straight to the psychological core.

If you’re part of a gift exchange circle and feel like the usual stuff feels hollow, try swapping archetypes. Pick a card that matches the recipient’s current life season. Watch how the unconscious reads it.

I’d love to hear what symbols you’ve traded lately. What archetype felt right for your last exchange?
