Living in Bozeman, the nights are crisp and the sky is a black canvas. When I look up, I don't just see distant suns; I feel a connection. It's panpsychism in action—the idea that consciousness isn't just in our heads, but woven through the universe. David Chalmers talks about this, and I feel it when I'm outside.

As a florist, I spend my days with living things, but the night sky is alive too. To do this meditation, find a dark spot away from streetlights. Lie back on the grass, breathe slowly, and let the stars wash over you. It's a form of self-expansion theory (from Aron & Aron)—when you merge with something larger than yourself, your sense of self grows. Staring at the stars triggers this. You stop being just Tom the florist and become part of the cosmos.

In Tarot, The Star represents hope and guidance. It's a celestial body offering light in darkness. When you meditate under the sky, you're embodying that card. The Star is often paired with The Moon, which represents the subconscious. Under the night sky, you're engaging with that hidden depth. The night sky acts as a mirror, reflecting your inner state while connecting you to the infinite. I used to code AI systems, thinking about ethics and machine consciousness, but nothing hits me like the actual stars.

Start by focusing on one bright star. Notice how it twinkles. Don't try to force thoughts away; just observe. This is mindfulness meets cosmic awe. The Cartesian split between mind and matter dissolves when you look up and realize you're not separate from what you're observing. The universe isn't something out there; it's the space you're already in. Breathe in the cold air, let your shoulders drop, and stop fighting the quiet. Your thoughts will drift like clouds, and that's fine. The sky doesn't rush, and neither should you.

I've found that the best sessions happen when you stop trying to "achieve" enlightenment and just let the vastness do the work. The stars don't judge your wandering mind. They just keep burning. Over time, this practice rewires how you see yourself. You start noticing patterns in nature, the way leaves fall or how light shifts at dusk. It's not about escaping life; it's about returning to it with a wider lens. If you're new to this, start with ten minutes. Bring a blanket, maybe a thermos of tea, and just be still. The sky will do the rest.

Let me know if you've tried this. I'd love to hear what you see when you look up.
