Hey everyone. I'm a 46-year-old writer and stay-at-home parent based in Minneapolis. For the past year, I've been running a small weekly breathwork group at the local community center. Guiding people through stress management has given me a front-row seat to the dynamics of trust and vulnerability, which makes me think hard about spiritual community online safety.

Psychologically, we fall prey to the Trust Fallacy. We assume that because someone positions themselves as a spiritual guide, they must be benevolent. But that's bounded rationality—making decisions based on incomplete info and cognitive biases. In my breathwork sessions, I notice how participants often project their hopes onto the teacher. Online, that projection is weaponized by bad actors who exploit that very psychology. It's a reminder that our rationality is bounded by our emotional needs.

In the digital realm, this vulnerability is compounded by the lack of sensory feedback. You can't read micro-expressions or smell fear, which usually grounds your intuition. The Tarot's Moon card mirrors this digital illusion. It warns that not everything is what it seems online. Profiles can be fabricated, and the deeper currents of a group are often hidden.

I've seen how quickly people lower their guard when they're desperate for connection, walking right into the path of The Tower. The Tower signifies sudden upheaval, and too often, spiritual groups implode because members ignored early red flags, blinded by confirmation bias. The desire to believe in the promise of healing overrides critical vetting.

I'm really curious how you all navigate this landscape. When you join a spiritual community online, what concrete steps do you take to ensure it's safe? Have you ever experienced a 'Tower moment' where the reality of a group crashed down around you? How do you balance the human need for connection with the necessity of critical distance?
