I’ve been lurking here for months, usually just reading and upvoting. But this thread actually hit a nerve, so I figured I’d finally post. As a social worker in Chicago, I see how isolation kills growth—both personal and communal. Spiritual communities often focus on the flashy stuff: the branches. Big events, viral posts, quick fixes. But real growth happens underground. It’s about roots.

Psychologically, this mirrors Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development. We don’t grow alone; we grow through guided interaction with others who are just a step ahead. A spiritual community works best when it functions as a scaffold, not a stage. You share vulnerabilities, get feedback, and level up together. When communities skip the scaffolding and just perform, they stagnate.

In tarot, the suit of Pentacles is all about patience, steady progress, and nurturing what’s planted. It’s not about the sudden blaze of Wands or the storm of The Tower. It’s about the quiet work of cultivating soil. If a community treats spirituality like a competition for visibility, it’s ignoring the Pentacle wisdom: growth takes time, and it requires a shared environment where people can safely experiment and fail without judgment.

I’ve learned that the most resilient spiritual groups aren’t the ones with the biggest followings. They’re the ones where people show up consistently, share honestly, and support each other’s messy, non-linear journeys. If we want communities that actually grow, we have to stop chasing branches and start tending roots.

Has anyone else noticed how performance culture is suffocating real spiritual development in online groups? I’m curious to hear how you balance visibility with depth.
