I’ve been teaching yoga in Omaha for about six years now, and if I’m being completely honest, I’m exhausted by watching it get packaged into Lululemon campaigns and corporate wellness seminars. The asana work is solid, but something fundamental got lost in the translation. Lately, I’ve been dipping into ecstatic dance circles and group meditation sessions just to see what all the 2026 hype is about. And yeah, they’re picking up speed fast. But I want to talk about why, without the usual new-age fluff.

Look, I’m a customs officer by day. I spend my life checking passports, verifying borders, making sure everything stays neatly in its lane. So when I step into a room where fifty strangers are moving to ambient bass with zero choreography, my brain initially rebels. It feels chaotic. But that’s exactly where Carl Jung becomes relevant. He wrote extensively about how unstructured, ritualized movement can bypass the ego and tap into something deeper—what he called the collective unconscious. You don’t have to buy into the mystical side of it to see the psychological utility. When you move together without a script, you’re essentially doing a live, embodied version of shadow work. You’re letting the guarded, performative self take a back seat.

Tarot readers might look at this and immediately see The Star or The Hanged Man—cards that don’t just mean passive surrender, but realignment, community, and dropping control. That’s what these spaces are actually offering, whether the organizers realize it or not. Belonging. Not the curated, algorithm-fed kind you get from a wellness app, but the messy, unfiltered type where you sit on a scuffed hardwood floor in a converted warehouse and just breathe with people who look nothing like you.

I’m not here to tell you it’s a magic cure. Group dynamics can absolutely devolve into echo chambers or worse, emotional bypassing. I’ve seen it happen. But when it’s facilitated with actual boundaries and genuine intention? It’s striking how fast people drop their armor. The yoga industry lost its edge when it started prioritizing aesthetics over integration. These dance and meditation collectives are doing the opposite. They’re messy, they’re largely unprofitable in the traditional sense, and they’re exactly what we’ve been starving for.

Has anyone else here made the jump from structured mat practice to these more fluid group sessions? Or do you think it’s just another passing wellness trend? I’d genuinely like to hear your take.
