I’ve been reading through some of the recent sociological surveys tracking Gen Z’s dual-practice behaviour, and it’s fascinating to see it playing out in real life. As a 54-year-old former stay-at-home parent turned restaurant manager here in Lisbon, I’ve spent the last few years teaching a small weekly breathwork group at our local community centre. What’s striking me isn’t just how many younger folks show up, but how they practice. They aren’t picking a lane. They’re lighting a candle for the Virgin Mary, pulling a Tarot spread for career anxiety, and doing a grounding breathwork set before bed. It’s not confusion. It’s intentional layering.
I think we’re witnessing a quiet revival of syncretism, which scholars have tracked for centuries, but now it’s happening in living rooms and group chats instead of cathedrals. From a psychological angle, this dual-practice approach aligns with what I’ve read about cognitive flexibility. When you hold multiple belief systems, you’re not fragmenting; you’re training your mind to tolerate ambiguity. Carl Jung wrote extensively about how archetypes speak to us through whatever language we already understand. A young person raised in a traditional faith might just need the structured comfort of saints, while the Tower card gives them a visual vocabulary for sudden life changes. Both are pointing to the same inner work.
I’ve noticed this in my own group too. We do a simple full-moon release ritual, but half the table prays to their grandmother’s saint while the other half shuffles a deck. The energy doesn’t clash. It compounds.
