I've been lurking on that William James thread (those Harvard Press ISBNs for The Varieties are gold, by the way). Honestly, reading James while I'm in the booth recording a commercial that's going to get cloned by some LLM next week feels like a glitch in the matrix.
James wrote about "states of consciousness" being distinct from the waking self. He didn't pathologize them; he just observed them. Now we've got tech promising to "upload" consciousness or simulate a "digital twin." It hits me as a twisted version of Jung's work. We're trying to externalize the Shadow instead of integrating it.
Look, I'm five years sober. I know what it feels like when the ego wants a shortcut. The "love and light" crowd on here sometimes reminds me of that. They want the transcendence without the dark night of the soul. They want the High Priestess wisdom without staring into the abyss. Now we've got AI offering a new shortcut: "Let the algorithm meditate for you." "Let the tech transcend you."
It's like the Moon card energy. Illusion. Instincts rising from the deep. But instead of learning to navigate that murky water, we're building a bridge of code over it. We're generalizing from
