Trading Talk Therapy for Self-Reiki: Who Actually Gets to Define Healing?
-
I’ll keep this short. Two years in a Zen monastery taught me to sit with discomfort, but Vancouver’s damp winters still dragged my nervous system down. I swapped my weekly CBT sessions for self-Reiki. My therapist didn’t fire me. She actually asked how I was tracking my progress. That threw me off.
Conventional medicine runs on evidence, protocols, and measurable outcomes. I get it. But when I place my hands on my sternum and feel that familiar warmth spread through my chest, something shifts. It’s not magic. It’s probably a mix of vagal tone regulation and the placebo effect doing its quiet work. Still, the relief is real. I’ve slept through the night for three weeks. My shoulders don’t hike toward my ears at 3 PM anymore.
Jung wrote about how the psyche heals itself when we stop fighting it. Carl Jung called it the self-organizing nature of the unconscious. In tarot, you see it in the Justice card—not as a gavel, but as scales finding balance. When you stop outsourcing your regulation to a clinical manual and start listening to your own nervous system, you’re just letting that scale tip back. There’s a wabi-sabi grace in accepting that healing isn’t always clean or clinically documented. Sometimes it’s just imperfect, quiet, and enough.
Feng shui teaches that stagnation breeds illness. Energy needs to move. Whether that’s physical qi, emotional residue, or just stuck thoughts, the mechanism feels similar. I don’t claim Reiki cures clinical depression or replaces crisis care. But for anxiety that lives in the body, sometimes talk alone just spins the same wheel.
Who decides what’s legitimate medicine? The FDA? The DSM-5? Or the person who finally stops shaking at their kitchen sink? I’m not anti-science. I’m pro-relief. If a practice leaves you more present, less reactive, and capable of sitting with a koan without your chest tightening, maybe it deserves a seat at the table.
Curious how others navigate this. Have you ever felt dismissed for pursuing energy work alongside traditional care? Or did your provider actually meet you in the middle?
