I need to talk about something that happened last month because I haven't seen enough honest warnings about this stuff. I've been doing Wim Hof style breathwork for about eight months with zero issues. Loved the tingles, felt like I was unlocking something. Then I tried a holotropic-style workshop with the evocative music and sustained hyperventilation. About twenty minutes in, my chest locked up completely. I'm talking full-blown panic attack. My hands cramped into claws, my vision tunneled, and I genuinely thought I was dying. The facilitator just kept telling me to "breathe into it" which was the absolute worst thing I could have heard.

It took me a solid hour to come down, and I was shaky for two days after.

After digging into what actually happened, I landed on polyvagal theory and it finally made sense. I wasn't failing at the practice. My nervous system basically flipped from sympathetic arousal straight into a dorsal vagal freeze state. The hyperventilation pushed my body so far past its window of tolerance that my system pulled the emergency brake. I wasn't transcending. I was literally in survival mode.

Here are the warning signs I completely ignored: my jaw was clenched tight before I even started, I had this weird detached feeling in my fingers, and there was a tight ball of dread sitting in my stomach that I wrote off as normal pre-session anticipation. If you feel those things, stop. Seriously.

I learned the hard way that more is not better with breathwork. I've since dialed it way back to basic box breathing and nasal only practices. I'm actually kind of angry at the toxic positivity in a lot of these circles that frames a panic response as some kind of breakthrough or emotional release. Sometimes your body is just saying no. Listen to it.

This is the part that gets me. I've been sitting with this stuff for over thirty years and I've watched breathwork go from a quiet adjunct practice to this whole... industry. And the "if you're freaking out you're healing" crowd is dangerous. Full stop.

Your read on polyvagal theory sounds right to me. Stephen Porges' framework actually explains why that facilitator's advice was so counterproductive โ€” when you're in dorsal vagal freeze, "breathe into it" is like telling someone having a seizure to just relax. The system has already disengaged. You can't think your way out of it.

What bugs me is that people have taken practices that were originally developed within contained, Lineage-based contexts โ€” where teachers actually knew the signs of nervous system overload and would pull people back โ€” and stripped all the guardrails off. Holotropic breathwork at least has the Grof pedigree behind it, but even there, I think the group workshop format is asking for trouble. You've got one facilitator watching twenty people hyperventilate to tribal drumming. That's not a therapeutic container, that's a recipe for what happened to you.

I do want to push back slightly on Wim Hof though โ€” just because you had eight months of no obvious issues doesn't mean it was harmless. The whole point of that method is sympathetic activation. You were essentially training your nervous system to tolerate more arousal, which might have actually lowered the threshold for the crash you experienced in the holotropic session. That's my theory anyway. I'm not a clinician.

Good on you for backing off to box breathing. Sometimes the boring practice is the right practice.

Fair, but isn't there a version of this where "the system pulling the emergency brake" IS the breakthrough โ€” just not the fun, tingly kind? The polyvagal framework explains what happened, but it doesn't necessarily mean nothing was being processed.
