For ten years, I woke up tasting copper. Same dream, every few months. I’m standing in this empty vet clinic—ironic, since I actually work at one—and my teeth just start crumbling. Not breaking. Crumbling. Like wet chalk. I’d wake up sweating, heart hammering, and just tell myself it was stress. You know, the classic “anxiety dream” everyone brushes off.

But dreams aren’t just neurological static. When you actually sit with them, they start talking back. I finally stopped running from this one last spring. I started journaling it, sketching the imagery, even laying out a simple tarot spread just to see what the cards would mirror back. The Eight of Swords keeps showing up in my readings, which tracks—bound by my own mental paralysis, not external forces. Carl Jung wrote extensively about dreams as the psyche’s way of compensating for what we ignore in waking life. He called it the self-correcting mechanism of the unconscious. Honestly, that clicked for me. I’d spent my twenties swallowing every hard truth about my art, my relationships, my boundaries. I was performing competence while rotting from the inside out. Teeth, in almost every symbolic system, are about voice, authority, and the ability to bite back. Mine were literally dissolving because I’d never used them.

The breakthrough wasn’t some mystical lightning bolt. It was just me finally admitting I was terrified of speaking up. I started using dreamwork as part of my ritual practice—drawing the crumbling teeth, writing letters to the version of me in the dream, even doing a simple active imagination session where I let the dream-teeth tell me what they needed. Within a month, I quit a draining gig, told a friend I’d been avoiding for years that I needed space, and actually submitted my portfolio to a gallery I’d been too scared to approach. The dream stopped. Not because I “fixed” it, but because the message had been received.

I’m not saying dream interpretation is a crystal ball. It’s more like a mirror that only shows what you’re ready to see. If you’ve got a recurring dream you’ve been treating like background noise, have you ever tried actually conversing with it? What happened when you stopped running?
