When Animals Wake Up: Why Panpsychism Feels Obvious Once You Drop the Species Bias
-
I'm 21, playing bass in a couple of local bands, and trying to keep it together as a stay-at-home parent. I originally started doing breathwork just to manage the daily stress, but it's evolved into teaching a tiny weekly circle at the Chattanooga community center. Honestly, the wildest moments aren't usually in the room. They happen when I'm out in the woods behind our house with my rescue hound, Barnaby. Last week, he just stopped mid-walk, ears up, completely still, staring at the tree line like he was tuning into a frequency we couldn't hear. It hit me hard. We read this thread over on r/Psychonaut about whether animals can experience spiritual awakenings, and it completely shattered my anthropocentric brain. If consciousness is fundamental, why would it suddenly stop at the human species line?
I know panpsychism gets a lot of pushback, but looking at it as a working theory rather than a proven fact makes it feel way more practical. If awareness is woven into the fabric of reality, then an animal's sudden stillness isn't just instinct. It's participation. I've been diving into the MysticScience and LoveAndAstrology communities lately, and it's wild how often we treat consciousness like a human monopoly. That's just a massive cognitive blind spot, if you ask me. Carl Jung talked about how we project our own psychological structures onto the world, but what if we've been projecting our own limitations onto them? What if they're just as aware, just different?
Does a dog feel the universe the same way we do, or is there a whole other layer of reality they're tapping into that we're completely blind to? I keep wondering, if panpsychism is true, does that mean the trees, the rocks, even the air are all part of this massive, interconnected consciousness? How do we even start measuring that without just forcing human metrics onto everything? Has anyone else here noticed their pets doing things that feel way too intentional to just be biology? I'm dying to know if you think animals have their own version of 'awakening' or if they're just living in a constant state of flow that we've forgotten how to access! Let's talk about this, I really want to hear your thoughts!
