The Dam Finally Broke: When Science Stops Asking "If" and Starts Asking "How"
-
I saw the news about McGill’s massive psychedelic trial and honestly, I’m done pretending this is just another wellness trend. When researchers finally stop asking if these compounds are dangerous and pivot to how we scale them responsibly, you know the cultural dam actually broke. It’s not a fad anymore. It’s infrastructure.
Look, I’ve spent years in social work, mostly remote, hauling clients through trauma and spiritual crises. I know exactly what happens when we throw institutional frameworks at sacred experiences without checking the foundation. The Tower card doesn’t just bring down old structures; it forces you to rebuild with something that actually holds weight. That’s where we’re at. The evangelical dogma I grew up with treated altered states like moral failures. Now the medical establishment is trying to clinicalize them. Both extremes miss the point.
Jung warned us about projecting the collective unconscious onto external systems without doing the internal work first. Carl Jung mapped how we integrate the shadow, and scaling psychedelic therapy without proper community support just creates a new kind of spiritual bypassing. I’ve watched people come out of a session thinking they’re healed, only to crash when they return to a support network that doesn’t know how to hold non-ordinary states. That’s not progress. That’s negligence.
But I’m not gonna pretend the shift isn’t necessary. We’ve been operating in the dark for fifty years. The High Priestess doesn’t hoard knowledge; she guards the threshold until the seeker is ready to cross it. Institutional research might be blunt, but it’s finally giving us the language to protect people instead of just policing them. If we’re going to scale this, we need energy workers, trauma-informed facilitators, and actual community networks embedded in the protocol. Not just sterile clinic rooms.
I think the real test isn’t the dosage or the fMRI scans. It’s whether we can build containers that actually honor the messiness of human transformation. What’s your take? Are we actually ready for this, or are we just swapping one set of dogmas for another?
