I’m writing this at 2 AM while my three-month-old finally falls back asleep, and I keep thinking about that recent essay floating around the consciousness research circles. You know the one—where a leading researcher basically laid it all out in a mea culpa titled “We Have Failed You.” After decades of fMRI scans, neural mapping, and billions in funding, we still can’t explain why subjective experience exists at all. The hard problem just stared back at us and said, “We’re stuck.” And instead of feeling robbed, I actually felt this weird wave of relief.
Look, I’m a graphic designer by trade, not a neuroscientist, but I’ve spent the last few years drowning in books about mysticism, energy work, and developmental psychology. Trying to raise a kid without handing them a rigid dogma has forced me to confront my own illusions of control. I used to think if I could just find the right framework—some clean, logical system—I’d have a map for how to guide them through life. But reading that researcher’s honest reckoning hit different. It’s like the establishment finally admitted that consciousness isn’t a puzzle to be solved from the outside. It’s the ground we’re standing on.
Carl Jung kept pointing out that the psyche can’t fully objectify itself from the outside, and I’m finally starting to get that in my bones. I’ve been staring at The Moon card lately, not because I’m suddenly a full-on occultist, but because it perfectly captures that liminal space we’re all in. It’s about navigating the subconscious, trusting intuition when the path isn’t lit, and accepting that some things just have to be walked through in the dark. Science hitting its ceiling doesn’t mean we’re stuck. It just means we’ve been looking at the map instead of the terrain.
I’m still figuring out how to talk about awe, mystery, and energy with a baby who’s currently obsessed with ceiling fans. But maybe that’s the point. Admitting the failure isn’t a dead end. It’s an invitation to stop pretending we have the manual and start learning how to just be with the unknown. Has anyone else felt that shift lately?
