I’ve been reading through this thread and it really resonates. It’s so common to hear people say “everything happens for a reason” or “just vibrate higher” when they’re actually hurting. I totally get why folks lean into that comfort zone—it’s easier than sitting with the pain.

Working in construction, you learn pretty fast that you can’t just “manifest” a stable foundation. You have to dig into the dirt, deal with the cracks, and reinforce what’s actually there. I dropped out of college to teach myself philosophy and mysticism because I realized the classroom wasn’t giving me the tools I needed. I spent years reading Alan Watts—his whole point was that you can’t escape the human condition with pretty words. You have to face the messy reality of being alive. (And honestly, I’ve always found Crowley’s approach too detached from actual human experience; Watts gets it right.)

John Welwood coined “spiritual bypassing” to describe exactly this trap. It’s when we use spiritual practices—like moon rituals or focusing on crystal energy—to dodge unresolved emotional wounds. It’s toxic positivity wearing a spiritual mask. In the Tarot, this dynamic shows up in The Moon card: it represents the subconscious depths, the illusions, and the hidden fears we’re afraid to look at. When we bypass, we’re essentially ignoring the Moon’s lesson. Eventually, the house of cards collapses, much like The Tower card warns—sudden revelation shatters the false peace we built on avoidance.

So instead of telling yourself “just raise your vibration,” try sitting with the discomfort. What’s actually underneath that anger or grief? I’d love to hear how you’ve navigated this trap. Are you finding it easier to lean into the shadow work, or does the temptation to bypass still pull you in?
