Stretcher Duty & Shadow Work: Treating Volunteer Service Like a Path
-
Look, I’m a 25-year-old paramedic stuck in rural Vermont, and yeah, my “spiritual practice” mostly involves pushing a gurney through snow. But lately, I’ve been treating that volunteer service not as a job, but as a genuine spiritual discipline. After deconstructing my evangelical upbringing, I stopped looking for the sacred in stained-glass windows and started finding it in simply showing up for people.
Jung called it “active imagination” or “shadow work”—facing the messy, unglamorous parts of life head-on. Every emergency call is basically a live archetype in action. You’ve got the Warrior archetype pushing through chaos, but there’s also the Healer showing up with bandages and calm words. I’ve started mapping these moments to tarot cards. The Chariot isn’t just about victory; it’s about disciplined movement through crisis. And Justice? That’s the ethical core of volunteering—doing the right thing when no one’s watching.
I’ll admit it’s a bit absurd. I’m out here in the woods, wrapping my trauma calls in Jungian theory and tarot symbolism like I’m some kind of modern-day mystic. But that’s the point. Service as practice isn’t about feeling holy. It’s about showing up, doing the work, and letting the experience rewire your relationship to the world. Deconstruction stripped away the dogma, but it left room for a spirituality built on action, empathy, and facing your own shadow in the field.
How do you all integrate service into your practice? Or am I just a guy in a reflective vest overcomplicating stretcher duty? Drop your takes below.
