I’ve been reflecting a lot on how we connect these days. Back in university, I’d pull 12-hour coding shifts, got completely burned out, tried those meditation apps, but honestly, I never stuck with them. Too rigid. Lately, I’ve been attending group breathwork circles here in Chengdu, and it’s… surprisingly different. Maybe it’s quietly replacing the traditional “third place”—you know, the local cafe or the craft beer pub—with something more visceral.

From a psychology angle, I think it might tie into polyvagal theory. When a group breathes in sync, you possibly trigger a shared parasympathetic state. I’m not sure if it’s “spiritual” or just coordinated physiological regulation, but the group dynamic creates a collective flow state. It’s less about chanting and more about nervous system entrainment.

There’s a tarot layer that keeps popping up for me. The Star represents healing and hope, but in a circle, it feels more like The World—closing the loop, creating wholeness through shared rhythm. Or maybe it’s The Tower, but inverted: structured chaos that actually grounds you. I’m still skeptical of the woo-woo marketing, but the actual experience? It’s hard to dismiss. Maybe it’s just effective group psychology. I’d love to hear your take. Do you think these circles are actually building real community, or is it just another wellness trend?
