I’ve spent the last few years backpacking through ashrams and monasteries across Asia, and honestly? I’m seeing a pattern that’s getting called out more and more in our community. We call it “spiritual bypassing,” and it’s basically using meditation, affirmations, or retreat vibes to skip the messy, necessary work of emotional healing.

John Welwood coined the term, but Jung would’ve recognized it instantly. It’s classic shadow avoidance. You sit in a silent room in the Himalayas, chanting “I am love,” while your actual unresolved grief, anger, or trauma gets neatly packaged away. The problem? The shadow doesn’t disappear. It just waits in the wings, ready to sabotage you later.

In Tarot, this mirrors The Devil card. It’s not about literal demons; it’s about the illusion of control and the chains we forge when we refuse to face our darker emotions. You think you’re “above” them, but you’re just wearing spiritual handcuffs. And when reality hits, The Tower drops. Not because the universe is punishing you, but because a foundation built on bypassing is inherently unstable. It’s like building a greenhouse out of bubble wrap—looks pretty until the first storm rolls through.

As a 25-year-old florist in Bozeman, I see it in my own life. I used to treat every bad day as a “karmic lesson,” which just became a clever way to avoid actually processing the hurt. Real healing isn’t about floating above your emotions. It’s about getting in the dirt with them. You don’t prune a plant by ignoring the rot; you cut it out and let it breathe.

Our community’s current debate isn’t about whether spirituality is good. It’s about the ethics of using it as an escape hatch. If we’re just using mantras to silence our inner critic, we’re not healing—we’re numbing. And numbness isn’t a sustainable way to live.

Has anyone else noticed how retreat culture sometimes rewards the “enlightened” facade over actual emotional labor? How do we shift from bypassing to genuine integration?
