I was on a double shift last Tuesday, dealing with a particularly rough ER night in Brooklyn, and I cracked my phone just to zone out. Instead of finding peace, I got hit with the usual: another "ancient wisdom" coach selling a $297 course on "shadow work," complete with a perfectly lit crystal altar and a heavily filtered sunset. I actually laughed out loud right there in the break room. Not because it’s funny, but because it’s so painfully familiar.
Look, I spent years in a comparative religion program before I realized I’d rather scrub wounds than write papers about ritual purity. Leaving academia taught me one thing: context matters. When you strip meditation or breathwork from its ethical frameworks and cultural roots, then slap a subscription model on it, you’re not selling awakening. You’re selling a dopamine hit wrapped in mystical packaging. I think a lot of us are hitting a wall with this. The online spiritual scene feels like it’s running on empty.
From what I’ve seen, it plays out exactly like the Tower in tarot. We build these gorgeous, fragile structures of belief around influencers who promise we’ll finally be "fixed." Then the lightning strikes. The guru gets canceled, the course drops in price, or you just realize you’re still tired, still anxious, still human. Carl Jung wrote about the shadow for a reason—we can’t outsource our own integration to a faceless webinar. When we do, we’re just feeding confirmation bias, chasing the illusion that enlightenment is a product you can unbox.
I’m not saying all online community is dead. I still love diving into DreamSanctum threads or messing around with AIOracle prompts when I’m stuck. But there’s a difference between shared exploration and a transactional pipeline. The burnout is real because we’re trying to spiritualize what’s basically marketing.
So where do we go from here? I’m trying to pull back. Focusing on grounded practices, actual peer-to-peer accountability, and remembering that the Moon card isn’t just about pretty illusions—it’s a warning to navigate carefully when everything looks like magic but feels hollow.
