Pixels vs. Presence: Are We Just Trading the Temple for Another App?

I’m nineteen, spend my days crawling under Austin sinks as a plumber, and teach yoga on the side. Lately I’ve been watching this weird shift in the practice space. Everyone’s jumping onto Discord servers, Instagram pods, and those AIOracle-style forums looking for “community.” I get the appeal. It’s convenient. You can tap into a practice from your couch without dealing with the commercialized studio grind. But honestly? I’m starting to think we’re mistaking connectivity for actual resonance.
When I’m on the mat with a room full of people, I feel something that a Zoom call just can’t replicate. It’s not just the shared breath or the silence. It’s that heavy, quiet energy that builds when you’re physically in the same space. Carl Jung actually wrote about this in his work on group dynamics—he called it “psychic contagion,” where the presence of others literally shifts your nervous system and opens up something deeper. Carl Jung. You don’t get that through a screen. You get a buffer. You get performance.
I’m not saying digital spaces are useless. I just know tools don’t replace friction. Online platforms are great for finding your people when you’re isolated. They’re a lot like the Three of Swords in the Tarot—sharp, isolating, but sometimes necessary for clarity before healing. But when we treat a Discord channel like a sangha or a circle, we’re skipping the mess that actually builds trust. Real spiritual community requires showing up unfiltered and sometimes uncomfortable. Screens flatten that. They give you the aesthetic of connection without the actual risk.
I’ve been trying to pull back from the asana-as-product mentality in yoga, and I’m seeing the exact same pattern online. We’re commodifying presence again. Just swapping the $40 drop-in class for a $15/month digital subscription. I think if we want depth, we need to stop treating community like a utility you can stream. We need to build actual containers. Maybe that means hybrid models. Maybe it means showing up to a local meet-up even when it’s inconvenient. But if we keep chasing the glow of the screen, we’re just replacing the temple with another app, and calling it awakening.
