I’ll be honest—I used to treat New Moons like a cosmic grocery list. Blackout candles, rose quartz, a journal entry that read like a grant proposal. I’d light the wick, write “abundance, clarity, peace,” blow it out, and go back to grinding through double shifts at the coffee shop in the middle of a Duluth February. Nothing stuck. For three years, zero measurable change. Just me feeling slightly ridiculous holding a crystal while the heating bill skyrocketed.

The shift didn’t come from buying a more expensive altar cloth. It happened when I finally stopped performing the ritual and started actually sitting with the discomfort underneath it. I fell into all this after a pretty rough mental health crisis in my mid-twenties, so I’m deeply skeptical of anyone selling quick fixes. Eventually, therapy pointed me toward Carl Jung’s work on the shadow. Jung wrote about how we project what we refuse to acknowledge, and I realized my “wish lists” were just spiritual bypassing. I was asking the universe for calm while actively ignoring the burnout I was living. Cognitive dissonance doesn’t care about your candle wax.

Tarot’s been teaching me the same thing, honestly. When I keep pulling The Moon in spreads about my practice, it’s not a warning—it’s a mirror. The card shows the crayfish crawling out of the water, caught between two dogs. It’s about surface illusion versus what’s actually swimming beneath. My rituals failed because I was stuck in the fog, writing down what I wanted to feel instead of naming what I was avoiding.

Last New Moon, I skipped the aesthetic. I just sat on my floor with a blank page and wrote down one real constraint: “I’m exhausted because I say yes to everything.” Then I set a tiny, actionable boundary. No crystals. No chanting. Just alignment. Two weeks later, I declined a weekend shift without guilt, and the anxiety actually dropped. Not magically, but measurably.

I’m not here to sell a guru routine. Rituals aren’t vending machines. They’re just a container for focus. If your practice feels like performance, it probably is. Try stripping the props and asking what you’re actually running from. The moon doesn’t care about your playlist. It just reflects what you’re willing to look at.

Has anyone else hit that wall where the same ritual suddenly clicks after years of dry spells? I’m curious how you shifted your relationship to it.
