One Session, Years of Shift: When the "Long Path" Falls Apart
-
I’ll keep this short because I’m not great with long-winded explanations, but I need to put this out there. Six months ago, I sat down for what was supposed to be a twenty-minute breathing exercise before a library shift. Nothing fancy. No guided track, no incense. Just me, a drafty window, and the low hum of Oslo outside. And in maybe three minutes, something just… snapped open. Not a poetic metaphor. A literal, physiological uncoupling of the mental static I’ve carried since my early twenties. I walked out of that room and the rest of my year just rearranged itself around that quiet.
We’re always fed this idea that spiritual growth is a linear climb—thousands of hours on the cushion, years of study, slow accumulation of insight. But phenomenologically, that doesn’t match how consciousness actually operates. I’ve seen it in people, and I’ve lived it. Carl Jung wrote about how the unconscious can surface in sudden, irreversible bursts during individuation. It’s not a staircase. It’s more like a phase shift. One moment you’re solid, the next you’re fluid, and the structure holding you together just reconfigures.
In tarot, we see it clearly with The Tower. People treat it like a warning, but it’s really just a map of sudden release. The slow burn is the structure; the lightning is the truth breaking through. Same with the Elder Futhark. I carve my own stones from local oak, and when I work with ᚺ (Hagalaz), it’s never about gradual change. It’s hail. Disruption. A reset that clears the board so something new can actually take root. You don’t negotiate with hail. You just let it fall.
I’m not saying you don’t need practice. Discipline matters. But I think we’ve mythologized the "thousands of hours" idea into a kind of spiritual procrastination. Sometimes, you just need one real contact with expanded awareness, and the ripple effects rewrite your whole trajectory. Has anyone else here experienced a single session that completely derailed their expected timeline? I’m curious how you made sense of it afterward.
