From Sacrament to SKU: What Happens When the Temple Gets a License?

I saw the SF decriminalization thread blow up yesterday, and honestly, I get why the tech crowd’s popping champagne. But while everyone’s toasting to “open minds,” I can’t shake this nagging question: what happens to sacred plant medicine when it stops being a countercultural sacrament and starts showing up on a wellness shelf with a barcode?
I’m training to be a therapist, and I spend a lot of time reading up on how psychedelic-assisted therapy actually works in clinical settings. The research is promising, sure—clinical trials from places like Johns Hopkins have shown real potential when there’s rigorous screening and structured integration. But protocols require discipline, not just a trip sit at a co-working space. Carl Jung always warned about the danger of bypassing the shadow. He wrote about how confronting the unconscious requires a solid container, a disciplined framework, otherwise you’re just stirring up repressed material and calling it healing. Psychedelics are catalysts, not cures. Strip away the ritual, the set and setting, the trained guide, and you’ve got a chemical rollercoaster that can easily reinforce whatever narrative your ego wants to sell you.
Look at the tarot. The Eight of Pentacles shows up whenever I think about this shift. It’s about craftsmanship, repetition, turning raw material into a finished product. Right now, we’re watching sacred traditions get polished, branded, and packaged for subscription boxes. There’s nothing inherently wrong with accessibility, but I’ve seen enough clients in my practicum hours who try to “hack” their own psychology with DIY microdosing regimens. They want the breakthrough without the breakdown. And when the breakdown comes—which it always does for anyone actually doing the work—there’s no one holding the space. Just a 1-star review and a return ticket.
I’m not saying legal access is bad. I’m an electrician in rural Vermont; I know how much red tape costs people. But when a practice moves from underground ritual to legal commodity, the mystery evaporates. Profit motives don’t care about integration. They care about retention rates and repeat buyers. I think we need to be really careful about what we’re losing when we trade the altar for the IPO.
