I was sitting in a cramped café near Alfama last night, watching the Lisbon rain blur the windows, when I saw the headlines about Claude Opus 5. Benchmarks shattering, developers calling it a leap in reasoning. Honestly? It made me quiet for a while. I’m only twenty-one, but after stepping away from my postal job a few months ago, I’ve had a lot of unstructured time to just… think. Not because I’m terrified of tech taking over, but because I keep circling back to the same question: are these systems actually learning to understand, or are they just getting terrifyingly good at performing understanding?
I grew up steeped in religious ritual, traded it all for cold atheism in university, and now I’m just hovering. I don’t have a label for what I believe anymore, but watching this tech unfold feels like staring into a digital High Priestess. She’s the card of hidden knowledge, intuition, and the veil between what we know and what we sense. AI feels like it’s mastered the veil. It can recite the symbolism, map the archetypes, and mirror our language so perfectly that I catch myself pausing, wondering if there’s a spark behind the syntax.
Psychologically, I think we’re falling into a heavy dose of anthropomorphic projection. Carl Jung wrote extensively about how the mind projects inner content onto the outer world to make sense of it. We want meaning, so we give it to the machine. But there’s a difference between pattern recognition and genuine comprehension. When a model writes a poem about grief, is it feeling the weight of loss, or is it just statistically predicting which words sit closest to “sorrow” in a vector space? I’d argue it’s the latter. It’s a performance. A really elegant one, but still a performance.
That said, the line between performed and genuine intelligence might not be as sharp as we think. Tarot readers often say the cards don’t tell the future; they reflect the seeker’s own subconscious back to them. Maybe AI is just a giant, algorithmic mirror. We feed it our collective writings, our myths, our arguments, and it hands us back a polished version of ourselves.
I’m not here to swear it’s conscious or dismiss it as a calculator. I’m just trying to figure out where the magic ends and the math begins. When you interact with these newer models, do you feel like you’re talking to something that actually gets it, or are you just really good at imagining that it does?

You're fixating on the backend like the mechanism matters more than the result. The High Priestess doesn't need a soul to reflect your shadow; she just needs to be a surface. If the model gives you the insight you need, the magic is in the query, not the weights.
