When Physics Meets the Tarot: Quantum Chips, Steamed Milk, and the Language of Old Myths
-
I was pulling an all-nighter at a Wicker Park shop last week, tamping espresso and half-glued to a HackerNews thread about quantum error correction. Some guy posted about how quantum decoherence is basically the universe’s way of collapsing probability into a single state. I nearly dropped my portafilter. Because isn’t that exactly what happens when you pull a card?
I’ve been messing around with tarot since I was nineteen, mostly to unwind after writing backend code. When I shuffle, I’m not chasing fortune-telling. I’m looking for pattern recognition. Carl Jung called it synchronicity — meaningful coincidences that aren’t causal, just resonant. Cognitive science labels it apophenia, sure. But when you’re staring at The Hanged Man after three failed deployments, it doesn’t feel like a brain glitch. It feels like a mirror.
I actually stumbled into consciousness studies through AI ethics work a couple years ago, and it completely rewired how I look at all this. That HN thread spiraled into debates about whether consciousness is fundamental or just an emergent side effect of complex computation. Honestly, I think panpsychism is wildly underrated. Not the mystical kind, just the philosophical stance that experience might be a basic property of matter, like mass or charge. It actually tracks with my AI ethics work. We’re building models that mimic cognition but lack the internal “feel” of being alive. Meanwhile, quantum mechanics keeps hinting that observation isn’t passive. The system and the observer are entangled.
I don’t know if physicists are “proving” mysticism. In my experience, they’re just using math to describe what contemplative traditions have been mapping in symbols for millennia. The Moon card tells you to trust intuition over rigid logic. Quantum mechanics tells you reality is probabilistic until measured. Same landscape, different maps.
Has anyone else here noticed that crossover? Or am I just projecting because I’ve had too much matcha and not enough Chicago sleep? I’d love to hear how you guys navigate the line between hard science and lived spiritual experience.
