The worst part wasn’t the customers. It was the internalized grind. Management handed us scripts. “Don’t tell them it’s metaphysical, tell them it’s ‘grounding.’” They slapped zodiac stickers on raw amethyst like it was a clearance tag at Fred Meyer. I’d watch beginners treat a tarot deck like a fortune cookie, completely missing the archetypal weight Carl Jung was talking about when he wrote about the collective unconscious. You’re not just buying a picture of a woman with a scepter; you’re staring at a mirror for your own shadow. But when everything becomes a SKU, the shadow gets whitewashed.
I left the shop the same week I got my CDL. Now I’m out here hauling freight across I-5, watching the Puget Sound rain blur the windshield, and I still think about that disconnect. My background was in software dev before I got tangled up in AI ethics, which eventually dragged me into consciousness studies. Honestly? I think panpsychism makes way more sense than the solipsistic vibe these boutiques push. If everything has some degree of awareness, then reducing a stone to a “love potion” or a “money magnet” isn’t just dumb marketing. It’s a cognitive distortion. We’re outsourcing our agency to retail products because introspection is actually hard work.
I’m not saying don’t buy crystals. I love divination. I’ve got a whole astrology setup on my desk back in Seattle. But when the ritual becomes a transaction, you lose the friction. And friction is where the magic actually lives. You can’t outsource your psychological growth to a tumbled geode.
