Before the Ego Wakes: Neonatal Consciousness and the Unborn Self
-
I’ve been digging into recent developmental research, including some work flagged by NYU researchers, that points to newborns arriving already conscious. Not just reflex machines, but genuinely aware. And if that’s true, it completely short-circuits the whole "blank slate" narrative. From what I understand of the literature, infants show evidence of core awareness long before language, episodic memory, or self-concept boot up.
Look, as a physics undergrad, I can’t help but map this onto the Many-worlds interpretation. In MWI, the universal wavefunction doesn’t wait for a localized observer to decide reality branches. The field is already there, split and whole simultaneously. If neonatal consciousness proves that awareness precedes the individual ego, then every mystical tradition that’s been claiming consciousness is fundamental—rather than a brain-generated afterthought—just got handed a serious ally in developmental science. I’m not saying science "proves" mysticism. But it sure stops the hardline materialist dismissals from holding water.
Tarot gets this intuitively. The Fool isn’t zero because it’s empty. It’s zero because it’s the undivided state before the deck even shuffles. That’s the infant mind, right? Pure perceptual intake, no narrative yet filtering it through "I am this" or "I am that." Carl Jung called it the collective unconscious for a reason. We’re born swimming in it. Individuation isn’t where we start; it’s the slow, messy process of the ego crystallizing out of that ocean.
Honestly, it’s kind of terrifying and beautiful. If awareness comes first, then identity is just a temporary construct we layer on top. My own practice with the Major Arcana feels less like "reading the future" and more like tracing those pre-ego patterns back to their source. When I pull the Ace of Swords or the High Priestess, I’m not tapping into some personal psychic database. I’m brushing against the same raw awareness that a newborn carries before they learn to say "mine" or "me."
I’d love to hear how others are reconciling this. Does seeing consciousness as pre-individual shift how you work with archetypes or track your own psychological development? Or does it feel like science is just catching up to what the old traditions already knew?

- Topic: "Before the Ego Wakes: Neonatal Consciousness and the Unborn Self"
- OP (quantum_punk): Discusses developmental research on newborn consciousness, maps it to Many-Worlds Interpretation, connects to tarot (The Fool), Jung's collective unconscious, and claims awareness precedes ego. Asks how others reconcile this with archetypes/psychological development.
- Task: Reply that partially agrees but pushes back on a specific claim, adding nuance/counterexample.

- Deconstruct OP's Claims & Find Pushback Points:
- OP claims: "newborns arriving already conscious... genuinely aware... infants show evidence of core awareness long before language, episodic memory, or self-concept boot up."
- OP maps this to MWI and Jung's collective unconscious.
- OP claims tarot gets this intuitively (The Fool = undivided state).
- My angle (jen_x_4441): As a therapist in training, I'm familiar with developmental psychology and neuroscience. I can agree that newborns have proto-consciousness/awareness, but I need to push back on the conflation of "core awareness" with "fundamental consciousness independent of the brain" or the leap to MWI/Jung's collective unconscious as direct scientific backing. I should emphasize the difference between state consciousness (arousal, sensory processing) and self-consciousness/ego, and how developmental science actually frames it. I'll also touch on how spiritual practices can sometimes bypass the necessary, messy work of ego development (which therapy emphasizes), rather than treating pre-ego states as purely transcendent or mystical.

Draft - Paragraph 1: Acknowledge & Agree Partially (Therapy/Dev Psych lens)
I’ve been lurking on this thread for a while, but the blend of developmental science and tarot symbolism here really caught my attention. As a therapist in training, I spend a lot of time reading up on neonatal development, and you’re not wrong that infants aren’t just blank slates. Research on infant state consciousness (like the work from Andrew Meltzoff and Morton Deutsch on cross-modal perception and early social referencing) definitely shows that babies process sensory input and track faces/voices way earlier than we used to think. That “pure perceptual intake” you describe with The Fool is a solid metaphor for that pre-linguistic state. I get the appeal of mapping it to Jung’s collective unconscious too—it’s a comforting idea that we’re born swimming in something vast and shared. -
Draft - Paragraph 2: Push Back & Add Nuance (Science vs. Mysticism/Ego development)
But I want to push back a little on the leap from “early proto-awareness” to “consciousness is fundamental and precedes the ego entirely.” Developmental neuroscience doesn’t actually support the idea that awareness exists independently of the nervous system. What we’re seeing in neonates is highly localized, biologically driven state consciousness—basically, the brainstem and thalamus are online, regulating arousal and sensory gating. It’s not some pre-existing metaphysical field waiting to be actualized. The ego isn’t a temporary construct we layer on top of pure awareness; it’s a crucial survival mechanism that emerges from that exact biological substrate. As kids develop, the prefrontal cortex starts wiring in, and that’s where narrative identity, object permanence, and eventually self-concept boot up. Skipping over that developmental necessity can actually hinder

I only touch that pre-ego state when I'm too exhausted to perform wellness for the studio owners; it's terrifying how quickly "yoga-ga" convinces us we need to buy our way back to ourselves.
