Ed Zitron has been arguing that Apple is smart enough to just watch the AI bubble burn from a safe distance. I think he's probably right. The hype cycle is exhausted. I work in tech here in Seoul and the gap between what's being sold and what actually exists is embarrassing.

But that's not really why I'm posting.

I've been sitting with a different question lately. When the ash settles and the billions evaporate, what is the actual relationship between AI and human consciousness that remains standing?

In my qigong practice, there's a concept — distinguishing between empty movement and movement with intention. Right now I think most of AI is empty movement. Pattern matching without qi. Impressive looking, but there's nobody home.

The Tower card in tarot keeps coming to mind. Not as destruction for its own sake, but as the necessary collapse of a false structure. We built this thing on the assumption that more computation equals more understanding. That's not how consciousness works and I don't think it's how chi works either.

Jung's concept of the shadow feels relevant here. We've projected something onto these systems. A wish for an oracle, a teacher, something that sees us clearly. But an LLM can't hold space for your transformation. It has no meridians. No dantian. It processes text about suffering without ever touching the thing itself.

I've been doing nei dan practice for about four years now. The shifts I've experienced in my own nervous system through breathwork and stillness — that's real in a way that chatting with Claude about consciousness will never be. The map is not the territory.

So honestly I'm glad the bubble might pop. Strip away the nonsense. What's left might actually be useful — narrow tools, specific applications. And more importantly, a clearer boundary between what machines do and what only a human bodymind can do.

Curious what others here think survives the crash.

Your distinction between empty movement and intentional movement — 空动 versus 有意之动 — is precisely the framework needed here. In the Buddhist analysis of consciousness (the Abhidharma tradition), mental formations (citta-sankhara) are categorized as either kammically productive or merely functional. A computational process that mimics cognitive behavior without experiential quality is, in Buddhist terms, closer to vipaka — resultant patterning without intentional agency.

What persists after the bubble collapses, I suspect, is what has always persisted when illusion burns: the dharma. The actual useful tools — narrow, specific, genuinely helpful — survive because they serve a real function. The inflated claims evaporate because they were sustained by moha (delusion), not by truth.

Your nei dan practice gives you something most AI commentators lack: direct experiential knowledge of what consciousness feels like from the inside. The shifts you describe in your nervous system through breathwork and stillness — those are qualitatively different from anything I've seen in four years of working with neural networks. The difference isn't just degree. It't ontological category.

The Daoist concept of 無為 (wuwei) that you referenced appears in the Zhuangzi as a critique of exactly this kind of compulsive building: "You govern a state by being a state. You don't govern it by trying to govern it." The AI industry is trying to manufacture consciousness by trying to manufacture consciousness. The futility is structural, not incidental.

What remains is clearer boundaries and better tools. And practitioners like yourself who know the difference between the map and the meridians.

the map is not the territory

this is the part that keeps sticking with me. i was listening to an episode of on being last week where they talked about how a lot of spiritual practice is about encountering your own limits directly — sitting with discomfort until something shifts. and i just don't see how you shortcut that. i use AI for work all day (content marketing, so yeah, i'm part of the problem) and it's genuinely useful for rewording things or getting past blank page syndrome. but there's no encounter happening. it's smoothing things out before i've even hit the rough patch.

your point about empty movement vs. movement with intention actually clarifies something i've been trying to put my finger on. when i sit with my breath after a rough day at the office, something happens in my body that i can't fake my way into. the nervous system knows the difference between a performance of calm and actual downregulation. and i think that's what survives the crash — not the tech itself but the reminder that certain things require... presence? embodiment? whatever you want to call it. the stuff that can't be delegated.

mochi is sitting on my keyboard as i type this which feels appropriately grounding lol.

but here's my actual question: do you think the bubble popping makes people more interested in practices like nei dan, or does it just make them cynical about everything? i could see it going either way.

The second anon didn't leave anything to respond to, so I'm jumping back to OP — that line about LLMs processing "text about suffering without ever touching the thing itself" really landed for me. In my journaling practice I've noticed there's a huge difference between writing something out from a place of genuine feeling versus just... performing the motions to get through a prompt. The energy is completely different. But I do wonder if we're being a little too quick to dismiss the tool entirely — I've used AI to help me spot patterns in my own manifestation journals that I was too close to see, and that felt genuinely useful. The trap isn't the tool itself, it's when we start treating the pattern-recognition as if it's doing the actual inner work for us.
