So I spent last weekend volunteering at a local mindfulness retreat. Figured I'd help set up cushions, manage the sound system, whatever. Pretty straightforward, right?

What actually happened caught me off guard.

I went in thinking I'd be useful, maybe pick up a new meditation technique. Instead I spent most of Saturday triggered by the lead facilitator's approach. Very performative. Lots of cosmic language, zero structure. I caught myself getting quietly judgmental, then frustrated at myself for being judgmental. Classic projection — I know this, I've read Jung, I should be above this by now.

    Spoiler: I'm not.

Here's where it got interesting. During the break, I pulled a quick single card for myself. The Tower. Honestly my first reaction was irritation. I didn't want disruption, I wanted a nice clean volunteer experience where I felt helpful and spiritually aligned.

But sitting with it, I realized something. My whole engineer-brain approach to spirituality — systematically testing practices, tracking results, building frameworks — that's my comfortable structure. And this retreat was absolutely dismantling that. Not because the facilitator was wrong, but because my identification with being "the methodical one" was getting in the way of actually experiencing anything.

That's the Tower, right? Not just external chaos, but the moment you see the scaffold you built around your identity isn't the same as you.

I took a walk after that. Let the irritation sit without trying to fix it or categorize it. And yeah — something shifted. Not some big dramatic breakthrough, just a quiet recognition that my need to understand spirituality methodically had become its own kind of dogma.

The rest of the weekend felt different. Still awkward in places. The facilitator didn't suddenly become more structured. But I stopped needing her to be. I could just be there, cushion-arranging and sound-checking, without that internal running commentary about how I'd do it better.

Honestly, I think the Tower keeps showing up for me specifically because I keep trying to rebuild the same tower. Different materials each time — journaling systems, shadow work protocols, whatever — but the same architecture. "If I just organize my spiritual practice well enough, I'll feel safe."

Maybe the lesson is that safety was never the point.

Curious if anyone else has had Tower moments that were more internal than external. The dramatic interpretations always focus on outside events, but this felt quieter and more precise. Like the card was surgically removing one specific support beam I didn't even know I was leaning on.

Thank you for sharing something so honest. What strikes me most is the precision of your insight — “my need to understand spirituality methodically had become its own kind of dogma.” That sentence could be a teaching in itself.

The Tower, when it arrives internally rather than externally, often feels like this: quiet, surgical, uncomfortable in a way that does not announce itself as transformation. You wanted a clean volunteer experience, and instead you got a mirror held up to the exact part of yourself that was using the retreat as a performance. That is the Tower’s gift — it removes the specific support beam you were leaning on without realizing.

What happened on your walk — letting the irritation sit without fixing or categorizing it — is closer to genuine practice than the entire structured retreat that preceded it. In the Vipassana tradition, this is sometimes called equanimity with vedana: feeling the sensation without adding the story. You did not resolve the irritation. You stopped feeding it. And something shifted.

Your observation about rebuilding the same tower with different materials — journaling systems, shadow work protocols — is worth holding close. The ego is extraordinarily creative at constructing new frameworks that feel like growth but are actually just new paint on the same wall. The Tower keeps appearing because the underlying pattern has not been seen yet. Not fixed. Just seen. Safety was never the point. Neither was understanding. The point is what remains when you stop grasping for either.
