What if the "better" matches were always there and you just gave yourself permission to engage differently because you felt like you'd done something meaningful?

I want to push back on the premise itself. You're assuming the Venus sign caused the shift, but what if you simply became more honest and that's what changed things?

"you're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void"

But Venus in Scorpio is factual about you, in the sense that it describes your actual relational pattern โ€” intensity, depth, the refusal to do casual. The astrology is secondary. You could have written "I don't do surface-level" and I suspect you'd get similar results. The symbol works because it's accurate, not because it's magic.

My feng shui clients do this constantly โ€” they want the relationship corner arrangement to do something, when really the act of paying attention to what they actually want is what shifts things. The crystal isn't pulling in love. You just finally told the truth about what you're looking for, and truth filters differently than performance.

The Jung angle is interesting, but I think you're overcomplicating it. Sometimes a filter is just a filter.

maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch

I think the simpler explanation is that you just self-selected for people who have enough self-awareness to have thought about their attachment style at all โ€” which is its own filter, but it's not really about Venus in Scorpio specifically. Put "avoidant attachment" on your profile and you'd probably get a similar crowd.

But here's the angle I don't think you're considering: what if the filter worked against you in a way you can't see? Like, who did you scare off that might've been good for you? People who don't resonate with astrology language aren't necessarily shallow. Some of them just... don't encode their inner world that way. I've done readings for friends who roll their eyes at the whole thing but will sit there and tell me about their dreams in startling detail. The depth is there, the vocabulary isn't.

I use tarot as a reflective tool specifically because I think Jung was onto something with the idea that symbols bypass the rational mind's defenses. But there's a trap there too โ€” you can start believing that people who don't speak your symbolic language don't have an inner life. And that's just flat wrong.

Your Two of Cups interpretation is solid, I'm not disputing that. But the Two of Cups is also about meeting someone where they are, not where you wish they were.

This is going to sound sideways but your many-worlds comment actually made me think about something I've been sitting with in my own system. When you say the profile change "collapsed you into a different branch" โ€” I think what might be happening is less about the universe splitting and more about which part of you is showing up to interact.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

Yeah. And the symbol pulls back parts of you too, not just other people. I've noticed that different parts in my system respond to completely different relational cues. One part sees "Venus in Scorpio" and gets activated into that obsessive, consuming energy you named. Another part โ€” someone younger, more guarded โ€” would never touch that profile with a ten-foot pole. So when you put that sign out there and start getting different matches, you're also becoming a different person in those conversations. The vulnerability isn't just a precondition for connection like you said about the Two of Cups. It's a precondition for a specific self to emerge and actually participate.

I don't think that's mystical exactly. It's more like... the symbol functions as a selection mechanism internally before it does anything externally. You filtered yourself first. The matches just reflect that back.

I'm genuinely curious though โ€” did you notice any shifts in how you felt initiating those conversations? Because in my experience, the "quality" change isn't just about who shows up in your inbox. It's that the act of signaling something true about your relational style โ€” even something as seemingly superficial as an astrological placement โ€” gives certain parts of you permission to speak. Other parts relax because they're no longer needed to perform the generic "chill, low-maintenance" dating persona that gets rewarded on most apps.

When I've done similar things โ€” put out signals that are specific to how certain parts actually want to relate โ€” the shift in my internal experience is way more noticeable than the shift in who matches me. Someone else in my system handles the small talk, someone else handles the deeper threads, and putting Venus in Scorpio out there might be like handing the keys to the part who actually wants intensity. Did it feel like that for you at all? Like you were writing for a different audience that included a different version of yourself?

You're framing this as filtering for depth, but I wonder if it's actually filtering for people who confuse intensity with intimacy โ€” and whether that distinction matters when you're grieving something you can't name. My mom died four months ago and I keep noticing how badly I want someone to "see" me in that raw place, but I've started suspecting that the longing for recognition can masquerade as readiness for connection. > "You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back" โ€” maybe, but maybe you're also pulling back people who are drawn to woundedness because it feels familiar, not because they can actually hold it.

I appreciate this post, and I don't think you're wrong that the signal changed things. But I want to push back gently on the framing that it was primarily the symbol doing the work.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

In my experience with somatic work, it's actually the opposite direction. The shift happened because you changed your relationship to your own depth before you ever put that sign on your profile. You said it yourself โ€” you were frustrated, you made a choice that felt slightly uncomfortable, you stopped performing the "hiking and tacos" version of yourself. That's a body-level decision before it's a symbolic one.

I tried something similar last year โ€” put my Venus placement on Bumble, Venus in Capricorn, which is probably the least sexy sign to advertise. And honestly? It didn't filter much at all. Same generic messages. Because I wasn't actually embodying that energy yet. I was still operating from my wound, from the part of me that wanted to be chosen without having to risk anything real.

The Two of Cups framing resonates with me, but I think the vulnerability has to be lived first, in your nervous system, before the symbol can do the calling you're describing. Otherwise it's just a costume, and the people who respond are responding to the costume, not to you. I don't think that diminishes what happened for you โ€” I think it actually makes it more interesting. The astrology might have been the language your body already knew it wanted to speak.

What if it didn't filter for depth at all โ€” what if it filtered for people who confuse intensity with intimacy, and you won't know the difference until the obsession curdles?

"maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch"

Or maybe you just raised the cost of entry and the Two of Cups thing is a post-hoc narrative. I do the same thing with tarot before trades โ€” I know I'm overfitting the story, but the act of filtering still works even if the framework is suspect.

I get what you're going for here, but my experience cuts the other way. I put my Venus sign on a profile years ago โ€” Venus in Taurus, if you're wondering โ€” and yeah, I got fewer matches. But the ones I did get? They weren't "deeper." They were people who thought "Venus in Taurus" meant I'd buy them dinner and be stable and uncomplicated. They were projecting a whole fantasy onto me that had nothing to do with who I actually am.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

That's exactly the problem, though. Symbols pull back what people want to see, not what's actually there. I'm not saying your Scorpio filter didn't work for you โ€” I believe you that the conversations changed. But I think you're overcomplicating why. You didn't activate some archetype in the collective unconscious. You put up a sign that said "I'm intense" and intense people showed up. That's not magic, that's just... communication.

The Two of Cups connection is solid, I'll give you that. But vulnerability as a precondition cuts both ways. The people who matched with me because of my Venus sign were often the least willing to actually be vulnerable once we met. They wanted the idea of someone grounded, not the actual messy human. I ended up taking the sign down after a few months because the filter was catching the wrong fish. Or maybe the right fish for the wrong reasons. Hard to tell.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

This resonates with my dream work more than I can cleanly articulate. When I set an intention before sleep โ€” not a request, more like a symbol held loosely โ€” the dreams that come back feel like they're responding to the shape of what I offered, not the content. I think you're right that the Venus sign thing is doing something similar, operating below the level of literal communication. It's not about whether astrology is "real," it's about what happens when you stop trying to describe yourself accurately and start speaking in images instead.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

Okay but what if the void pulls back exactly what you're already bracing for? I'm not trying to be a downer here, but my experience with intense symbolic work โ€” and I've got reasons to be cautious about this โ€” is that it tends to amplify whatever's already running in your system. If you're unconsciously drawn to dynamics that feel "deep" but actually pattern-match toward obsessive, consuming, don't-flinch energy... like, that's not necessarily depth. Sometimes that's just familiar chaos dressed up in occult language.

I think your Jungian framing is actually the thing that undoes your argument. Jung was pretty explicit that activating an archetype doesn't just attract the right people โ€” it activates the shadow too. Venus in Scorpio as a filter might be working, but what's it filtering for, exactly? People who don't flinch at intensity could also mean people who don't have healthy boundaries around intensity. Those aren't the same thing.

I'm not saying you're wrong that the matches changed. I'm saying the premise that "wanting someone who doesn't flinch" is inherently a good filter might be worth sitting with longer. In my experience, the people who are most comfortable with consuming, obsessive energy are often the people who want to be consumed. That's a Two of Cups situation that can get real dark real fast if neither person has done the shadow work first.

yeah and i think the symbol does work regardless of whether astrology is "real" โ€” venus in scorpio signals intensity so intensely that it becomes self-fulfilling ๐ŸŒ™ but i wonder if that's specifically a scorpio thing or if any Venus placement would do this? like would "Venus in Taurus" pull people who want stability and sensory comfort in the same way? i'm genuinely curious if the filter effect scales with how "charged" the placement feels culturally ๐Ÿค”

"maybe putting your Venus sign out there is a way of activating a specific archetype in the collective unconscious of whoever's scrolling"

I think this is the sharpest insight in your post, and I want to push it further. In my clinical work, I see something analogous all the time โ€” the language someone uses to describe themselves in early sessions functions as a filter for what they're willing to reveal. A patient who opens with "I'm a perfectionist" is signaling something very different than one who says "I struggle with anxiety," even if the underlying dysfunction looks similar. The symbol becomes the container.

Your Venus-in-Scorpio move is doing something structurally identical, just in a dating context. You're not describing attachment patterns in clinical language โ€” which would read as either cold or overwrought on a Hinge profile โ€” you're using a symbol that implies those patterns and letting the reader do the projection work. From a Jungian angle, that's actually more efficient than being direct, because it engages the other person's unconscious before their defenses kick in.

What I'd add is that the specificity matters more than the astrological framework itself. I suspect you'd get a similar filtering effect if you put "avoidant attachment survivor" or "I take intimacy seriously to a fault" โ€” but those read as red flags to most people, whereas "Venus in Scorpio" has enough cultural ambiguity that it functions as a dog whistle rather than a warning label. You found a symbol that means "I'm intense" to the right people and "I like astrology" to everyone else. That's not nothing. That's actually a pretty sophisticated communication strategy, whether or not you intended it that way.

I think you're onto something with the signaling theory, but I want to push back on the Jungian framing you're using โ€” specifically the idea that you're "activating a specific archetype in the collective unconscious" of people scrolling through Hinge.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

That's poetic, and I get the appeal, but from what I understand about Jung's actual model, archetypes aren't really activated that passively. They're structural โ€” more like cognitive scaffolding that shapes how we process experience, not something that gets "summoned" by a dating app prompt. What you're describing sounds closer to a priming effect, which is a well-documented phenomenon in cognitive psychology. You're priming a specific interpretive framework in people who already have some fluency in astrological symbolism.

I think that distinction matters because it actually makes your argument stronger, not weaker. If this were about collective unconscious activation, it'd be hard to test or replicate. But if it's about priming and self-selection, that's tractable. You're pre-selecting for people who have a category for "Venus in Scorpio" and all the psychological baggage that comes with it โ€” intensity, obsession, depth-as-value. That's not mysticism, that's just efficient filtering using a culturally loaded symbol.

Where I fully agree with you is the Two of Cups comparison, though I'd frame it differently. The Two of Cups isn't really about "finding your mirror" in a mystical sense โ€” it's about reciprocal recognition, mutual acknowledgment of value. When someone sees Venus in Scorpio on your profile and gets it โ€” not just understands it intellectually but recognizes it as meaningful โ€” you've already passed a significant compatibility filter. The card represents that moment of mutual recognition, and your Venus sign is functioning as the initial signal that makes that recognition possible.

The data you're describing fits this model well. You're not getting "better" matches in some objective sense โ€” you're getting matches whose interpretive frameworks overlap with yours sufficiently that they can read your signal accurately. That's a fundamentally different mechanism than archetype activation, and it has different predictive implications. You should be able to see variation based on the astrological literacy of your potential match pool, for instance, which wouldn't be predicted by a collective unconscious model but follows directly from a priming and self-selection model.

I appreciate your honesty about confirmation bias, but my experience was the opposite โ€” I put my Venus in Cancer on my profile hoping to attract nurturing types, and instead I got men who wanted me to mother them while offering nothing in return. My grandmother, who read horoscopes for our village in Kerala, would have said the problem wasn't the signal but the ahamkara โ€” what you project from your ego attracts others' ego, not their deeper capacity for exchange. The Two of Cups connection you made is beautiful, but I think it takes more than a symbol in a bio to create that kind of mutual pouring; it takes actual presence, which apps aren't really designed for.

"you're not just filtering for astrology people. You're filtering for people who are okay with depth."

This is the part I keep coming back to, because it matches what I've seen in my own tracking. I ran a similar test last year โ€” not with Venus sign specifically, but with a reference to my 8th house placements โ€” and the shift in who actually engaged was noticeable. Same mechanism, I think: you're not testing whether astrology "works," you're testing whether the other person can hold something slightly uncomfortable without deflecting. That's a real variable, and it's measurable in conversation quality within the first few messages.

"you're basically just ran a self-selection filter and called it quantum mechanics"

Yeah I said this already in another thread but I'll double down โ€” I did something similar with my Venus in Capricorn and the filtering effect was real, just not quantum. Got fewer matches but they actually showed up on time.

maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch

I'd push back on the many-worlds framing โ€” you don't need quantum mechanics to explain what happened when "raising the cost of entry" works perfectly well. But I do think you're right that the symbol is doing something beyond just filtering for astrology people, even if we can't agree on what.

the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch where the matches were always going to be like this

I keep coming back to this line because it's doing a lot of work and I don't think you even realize how much it's undercutting your own argument. If the many-worlds interpretation is actually doing the heavy lifting here, then the Venus sign was never the filter โ€” you were always in that branch. The symbol didn't do anything. It was just the coordinate label for a destination you'd already arrived at.

I tried something similar about six months ago. Put my Venus in Capricorn on my profile, thinking it'd filter for people who take relationships seriously, who aren't afraid of commitment and structure. What I actually got were a lot of people who wanted to tell me about their daddy issues and how they "need someone stable." Different signal, same problem โ€” I wasn't filtering for depth, I was filtering for people who recognized the archetype and projected their own unfinished business onto it.

That's what's nagging at me about your Two of Cups comparison. You're framing the Venus sign as a mutual recognition thing, but in my experience it functioned more like a Rorschach test. The people who responded weren't saying "I see you." They were saying "I see what I need." And honestly? I was probably doing the same thing on my end, reading intensity into messages that were maybe just... people being chatty at 1am.

I think you're right that something psychologically real is happening. But I'm not convinced it's the thing you think it is.
