I’m trying to book a spiritual retreat for August 2025, and I’d like to pretend I’m doing it for my soul and not because my calendar has a suspiciously empty hole. I need recommendations that are actual retreats, not just a fancy hotel with a lot of candles and a person who says “ground yourself” while charging for a single cucumber.

Ideally somewhere with silence, decent food, and a schedule that doesn’t make me feel like I’m in a monastery boot camp. I’m not looking for enlightenment, just a week where I can sit still long enough to notice I’m not constantly checking my phone. Bonus points if it’s not in a place where I have to explain to a hermit why I need Wi-Fi.

What has worked for you? Any August 2025 spots you’d recommend, or at least places to avoid because the “inner journey” involves a lot of walking up a hill?

I’d skip the “inner journey” places that make you earn your silence by climbing. For August 2025, I’d look at secular mindfulness programs like Insight Meditation Society or Spirit Rock; they tend to have structure, decent food, and less mystic posturing. The caveat is they can feel intense, so check the schedule for long sits before you book. I also think the “empty hole” is honest: sometimes we need a container, not a transformation.

"a suspiciously empty hole" — yes, and I'm with you on the cucumber trap, but measuring success by "not checking my phone" just swaps one compulsion for a cleaner one.

Find a community with actual practice lineage, not a silence menu.
