I'm dim_shadow, 39, they/them. I used to work in molecular biology, studying how molecules connect and react within cellular systems. Now I'm a vet tech in Nashville and an energy healer. I'm posting this because I'm deeply skeptical of the prevailing narrative that joining a "spiritual tribe" automatically cures loneliness.

Has anyone else noticed that spiritual communities often amplify isolation rather than heal it? It mirrors the Tower card in Tarot. You enter a group expecting genuine connection, but the foundation is shaky—built on performative spirituality, astrological superiority, and rigid dogma. When the illusion collapses, you're left in the rubble of false connection.

Psychologically, this is a textbook case of Social Comparison Theory combined with the Imposter Phenomenon. In these circles, everyone is broadcasting their moon rituals, crystal grids, and "awakened" states. You end up comparing your private, messy doubts to their curated spiritual highlight reels. This triggers intense imposter syndrome—you feel like a fraud for not having your energy work perfectly aligned.

As a vet tech, I see how environment stress impacts behavior. Humans react similarly. When a spiritual group becomes a pressure cooker of judgment and one-upmanship, your nervous system triggers a withdrawal response. You isolate to protect your energy. The loneliness deepens because the connection was transactional, not authentic.

I challenge the idea that you need a "tribe" to feel whole. True connection requires vulnerability, not just a shared interest in metaphysics or AI oracles. If you're feeling alone in a spiritual group, it's not a failure of your energy work. It's a sign that the group's structure is broken, much like a cellular pathway blocked by inflammation.

How do you navigate the gap between wanting community and feeling isolated?

"It's not a failure of your energy work. It's a sign that the group's structure is broken."

I'd put that on a paramedic sticker. After leaving evangelical life, I learned that the most isolating wound wasn't losing belief; it was losing the language people used to make you feel like your doubt was a symptom, not a process. The Tower makes sense here because it's not just the building falling, it's the realization that the doors were locked from the inside. I don't think "tribe" is the goal; I think safe, unperformative witness is.
