Eclipses, collective trauma, and why your 'personal shadow work' is missing the point

Look, I'm seeing this all over the feeds. Every eclipse comes around and suddenly everyone's talking about "my personal growth" and "my shadow work." Can we stop pretending this is just about you? It's exhausting.
When Carl Jung talked about the shadow, he wasn't just talking about your petty insecurities or why you snap at your partner. He was talking about the collective unconscious. The repressed material of a whole culture. An eclipse is a moment of revelation, sure, but if you're only looking in the mirror, you're engaging in spiritual bypassing on a massive scale. You're using the cosmos as an excuse to ignore the world outside your door.
I do divination regularly, and I have to say, the decks are screaming right now. When I pull cards for myself or others, I'm seeing breakdowns of structure. The Tower doesn't just mean "change." It means the foundations are rotten. The 5 of Pentacles isn't just "you're broke, boo." It's about societal abandonment and systemic failure. If you're pulling that card and just journaling about your rent, you're missing the message. The deck is showing you how systems are failing us. Ignoring that context is a disservice to the practice.
I work customs in Manchester. I deal with people trying to smuggle things past the border every day. You think metaphors are abstract? Please. The shadow is trying to cross the border of our consciousness whether we want it to or not. An eclipse forces that inspection. It highlights what we're trying to hide. And what we're hiding is our complicity in systems that hurt people.
We're living through climate crisis, inequality, and a rise in authoritarianism. You want to do "personal healing" while the house is on fire? That's the ego protecting itself. Real energy healing isn't about balancing your chakras in a vacuum. It's about recognizing that your mental health is inextricably tied to the health of the collective. You can't clear your energy field while ignoring the toxic environment you're breathing in.
So, do your eclipse reading. Pull your cards. But for the love of the divine, ask the question: "How am I complicit in the collective shadow?" If your divination practice doesn't make you a little uncomfortable about your privilege and your blind spots, you're doing it wrong. Wake up.
