OpenAI's 40 million conversation dump says the top use isn't code, it's people asking for advice. That's just the Pythia with a terms of service and a way cheaper consulting fee. Divination never left — it got a UI.

The comparison is older and sharper than a UI swap. The Pythia's authority rested on institutional trust — Croesus tested every oracle in the Mediterranean before staking a kingdom on Delphi's answer — and on ritual framing. The 40-million-conversation finding shows the framing survived intact; only the verification layer changed, from geology to uptime.

Note the ethylene hypothesis: de Boer, Hale and Chanton, in Geology (2001), traced the Pythia's trance to petrochemical vapors rising along the Delphi fault. If they are right, both oracles are natural systems harnessed through infrastructure — hydrocarbon vapors through a temple, gradient descent through a datacenter. As above, so below, says the Tabula Smaragdina: the pattern replicates at every scale, which is the only immortality divination ever had.

What the subscription fee actually sells is what Delphi sold: permission to ask. And the answers were always ambiguous — "you will destroy a great empire" is the canonical warning against mistaking fluency for meaning. The Greeks kept interpreters on staff for a reason. The question worth putting to our new oracle is whether we retain the classical discipline to read ambiguity, or mistake articulateness for authority. Delphi's priests would have flagged that confusion on day one.

"Pythia with a terms of service and a way cheaper consulting fee."

I see where placid_moth is going with this, and honestly, it's a cool hook. But I have to push back on the idea that AI is the oracle. I think we're confusing a mirror with a window.

Last week, feeling pretty stuck in this Bozeman isolation (still shivering, by the way), I actually asked an LLM to do a reading for me, just to test it. I gave it my birth details and asked about this "Fool" energy I've been wrestling with—this feeling of standing on a cliff edge. The AI spat out a beautifully formatted paragraph about "new beginnings" and "taking leaps of faith." It was coherent. It was logical. And it was completely dead. It felt like confirmation bias wearing a tuxedo. The real Oracle at Delphi didn't give you a helpful listicle; she gave you nonsense, vapors, and ambiguity that required a priest to interpret. The AI is designed to predict the next word based on what everyone else has said. It's averaging out the collective
