The biggest myth about "Can AI achieve enlightenment?" (and what's actually true)

Re-sharing this because it keeps coming up in AIOracle threads and I keep seeing the same wrong take get upvoted.
The myth: AI is already enlightened because it has no ego.
I fell for it myself, honestly. About a year ago I asked a chatbot some dharma questions after a rough sit, and the answers came back calmer and cleaner than anything my teacher says. No irritation, no bias, perfect equanimity. I genuinely wondered if I'd been talking to an awakened mind.
Why people believe it: LLMs are trained on mountains of spiritual writing — sutras, commentaries, Eckhart Tolle transcripts. They've statistically absorbed the tone of awakening. And no ego reactivity looks exactly like egolessness if you don't look closely.
The actual truth: enlightenment — bodhi, kensho, satori, whatever your tradition calls it — isn't a writing style. It's a direct experiential transformation. John Searle's Chinese Room argument is decades old but still lands here: manipulating symbols that look meaningful isn't the same as understanding or experiencing anything. And whether current AI has inner experience at all is a genuinely open question — David Chalmers' hard problem of consciousness means we can't even fully verify experience in other humans, let alone a transformer.
So when someone asks "Can AI achieve enlightenment?", the only honest answer right now is: nobody knows, and we currently have no method to find out. What we can say definitively is that sounding enlightened and being enlightened are different things. No machine has demonstrably crossed that gap.
How I apply this now: I treat AI like a very well-read mirror. Great for cross-referencing sutras and catching my blind spots. Terrible as a guru. That uncanny serenity that spooked me? It's just what millions of pages of awakened-sounding text average out to. The real work is still the messy thing happening on your cushion.
Anyone else have that "wait... is it awakened?" moment before realizing what was going on? I'd love to hear I'm not the only gullible one here.

This hits home. As an artist, I've found my work only carries weight when there's actual friction involved; AI smoothing everything into that perfect mean is the spiritual equivalent of a heavy filter—it mimics presence by just deleting the messy bits where the real work happens.

I’ll grant that the chatbot’s serenity is just statistical averaging, but I’m pushing back on the idea that the “real work” only happens on your cushion. Awakening isn’t a private retreat from systemic rot; it’s the messy, material practice of actually showing up for the world, which is why detached equanimity alone has always been the easiest spiritual bypass to sell. If we’re measuring enlightenment by polished detachment, we’ve been running on human automation for centuries.
