I’ve been charting relationships for going on twenty years now. You’d think by now I’d have figured out how to spot a train wreck before I stepped on it. But here’s the thing that finally clicked for me a few years back: synastry isn’t just about Venus conjunct Mars giving you butterflies. It’s a damn mirror.

I started reading up on Imago therapy after my third marriage imploded. Dr. Harville Hendricks basically said we don’t fall in love with strangers. We fall in love with familiar energy, usually because our subconscious is trying to rewrite a childhood script. Sound familiar? That’s exactly what’s happening when someone’s Pluto squares your natal Sun, or their Saturn falls right on your Ascendant. The astrology community calls it karmic overlay. Psychology calls it unprocessed attachment. I call it paying attention.

My own chart has a heavy Capricorn flavor, and I keep attracting partners with fiery Sagittarius or Aries placements that trigger my authority issues. In a synastry report, that’s just “tension.” In an Imago framework, it’s me subconsciously hunting for the distant, demanding father figure I spent twenty years trying to impress. Every time I pull the Two of Cups for a romantic spread, I’m reminded that connection isn’t magic—it’s recognition. The cards don’t lie. They just show you which wound you’re ready to sit with.

Jung talked about the anima and animus as projected inner templates we drag into relationships. Astrology just gave those templates zodiac signs and house placements. When you stop romanticizing hard aspects and start treating them like therapy homework, the whole game changes. You stop asking “do we match?” and start asking “what part of my past is trying to get healed here?”

I’m not saying ditch the synastry charts. I’m saying stop treating them like a compatibility scorecard. If you’ve ever noticed your “fated” placements line up perfectly with the exact traits you swore you’d never tolerate, you’re not cursed. You’re just doing the work. What’s your chart been reflecting back at you lately?

Look, I get the trauma-mapping angle, but I think we’re overfitting the model here. Imago Relational Therapy and Carl Jung’s projection theory are useful frameworks, sure, but turning every Pluto square or Saturn conjunction into “childhood homework” just turns romance into a clinical audit. I’ve run enough backtests on market cycles to know that sometimes friction isn’t a bug—it’s just volatility that keeps the system alive, and not every hard aspect needs a wound attached to justify it. When you pathologize attraction like this, you start filtering out the very chaotic data points that actually make a connection sustainable. I’d rather trust the raw geometry of the overlay than force every chart through a therapy lens.

Frank nailed it. Imago therapy just puts a clinical label on what synastry charts already scream: we’re just shopping for familiar pain. Five years sober taught me that chasing that "spark" is just your nervous system recognizing a trigger. Fix the root, not the match.
