I’m running on three hours of sleep and too much black coffee, which is probably why I fell down a rabbit hole last night about connectomics. If you’ve seen the recent work from the Janelia Research Campus mapping the entire fruit fly connectome, you know they found neural architectures that basically mirror artificial neural networks. Evolution and machine learning apparently converged on the same structural solutions. It hit me hard. Not just as a graphic designer who spends half my life staring at vector grids and alignment tools, but as a new parent trying to figure out how to raise a kid with some kind of spiritual grounding without just handing them a rulebook.
If computation is really a universal organizing principle, then maybe what we call "intuition" or "spiritual awakening" is just the nervous system recognizing those same underlying patterns. Carl Jung talked about archetypes as recurring, transpersonal structures in the psyche. I’ve always read that through a mystical lens, but what if it’s just cognitive convergence? The mind, whether biological or silicon, keeps stumbling into the same architectural shortcuts. It doesn’t make it less sacred to me. If anything, it makes the whole thing feel more woven together.
Tarot’s been my anchor lately. I keep pulling The Hierophant, which usually screams tradition and institutional dogma. I’m actively trying to avoid that for my kid. I don’t want them inheriting my deep skepticism of rigid systems, but I also don’t want them floating in a vacuum of "figure it out yourself." Maybe the goal isn’t to hand them a deck or a doctrine. Maybe it’s just teaching them how to read the patterns. How to notice when the same shapes keep showing up—in dreams, in code, in the way a nervous system learns to navigate a maze.
I’m not claiming this proves anything mystical. Just that when you strip away the cultural packaging, the underlying machinery looks suspiciously similar across mediums. Does anyone else feel that tension between the hard science of neural mapping and the soft, messy reality of raising a human in a secular age? How do you teach wonder without imposing certainty?
