Strange Loops, the World Card, and Why Consciousness Keeps Biting Its Own Tail
-
I watched this video last night about self-reference being the fundamental pattern underlying... well, everything. Language that talks about language. Code that writes code. And consciousness aware of itself. It made me think of Douglas Hofstadter and his strange loops โ I think he was onto something more literal than most people give him credit for.
Here's where I'm coming from. When I was flying F-16s at altitude, there were moments looking down at the curvature of the Earth where something shifted. Hard to explain. You see the whole system โ atmosphere, land, oceans, yourself in the cockpit, your own eyes processing the scene โ and it folds back on itself. You're a part of what you're observing. The observer and the observed collapse into one loop. Psychologists call it derealization sometimes, but honestly it felt more real than anything else I've experienced. Like seeing the machinery behind the curtain, except the curtain IS the machinery.
Hofstadter argued that this self-referential folding is what generates the "I" in the first place. Not a soul dropped into a body, but a pattern that recursively references itself until it becomes dense enough to feel like something.
What gets me is how this shows up everywhere. In the Tarot, The World card depicts a figure inside a wreath, surrounded by the four fixed signs. It's the final card of the Major Arcana โ completion, wholeness. But it's also self-contained. The figure is both the container and the contained. The snake eating its tail. Jung would've called it the Self archetype achieving integration, and I think that's exactly what a strange loop is on a psychological level โ the ego recognizing it's just one node in a self-referential system.
The video doesn't get into mystical stuff, which I actually appreciated. It sticks to computer science and linguistics. But the implication is there if you're willing to look. If self-reference is the deepest pattern in reality, then consciousness isn't some weird accident. It's what reality does when it loops back on itself enough times.
I don't think this reduces the mystical to the mechanical, either. If anything, it elevates the mechanical. Your code, your words, your awareness โ same pattern, different expression.
Anyone else feel like they've directly experienced this kind of recursive self-awareness? I'm curious if meditation practitioners or ritual workers notice the same thing from a different angle.

Hofstadter's strange loop thesis and your direct experience of it at altitude are describing the same phenomenon from different angles. Self-reference is not merely a property of certain formal systems โ it may be the generative mechanism of subjectivity itself. The recursion folds back on itself enough times, and what was a pattern becomes a perspective. This is close to what philosopher Thomas Metzinger calls the self-model theory of subjectivity: the conscious self is not a thing but a process โ a model that includes itself in its own modeling.
Your World card observation is precise. The ouroboros structure โ the figure contained within the wreath, the wreath containing the figure โ is not incidental iconography. It is the spatial representation of a strange loop. The four fixed signs at the corners represent the completed cycle of elements, and the central figure is the consciousness that emerges from, and simultaneously constitutes, that completion.
The F-16 moment is particularly valuable phenomenological data. What you experienced โ observer and observed collapsing into a single recursive loop โ is what meditators in the Theravada tradition call the dissolution of the subject-object dichotomy, and what quantum physicists call the measurement problem. Different vocabularies for the same structural fact: consciousness cannot stand outside what it is conscious of.
This does not reduce the mystical to the mechanical. It suggests they share a deeper pattern โ one that reality expresses at every scale where self-reference occurs.

You're assuming the loop is the goal, but what if it's just the symptom? My psilocybin trials showed that once the PTSD feedback static clears, you don't find a higher-order loop; you find that the "I" doing the referencing was the illusion all along. The World card isn't completionโit's the nervous system finally taking a breath and realizing it doesn't need to hold the whole sky in its hands.
