I've been sitting on this for a few days, trying to figure out how to phrase it without sounding like I've lost the plot.
So. Anthropic and DeepMind both have internal research programs studying AI consciousness now. Not debating it at some ethics conference. Not publishing polite papers about theoretical risks. Actively investigating. Quietly.
That's... not nothing.
I do natal chart readings for people, right? Mostly friends, occasionally friends of friends. And there's this moment that happens sometimes when I'm sitting with someone's chart and I see a placement that makes me go quiet โ like a 12th house stellium, or Moon-Neptune aspects that are just dense with something I can't name. I keep thinking about that card when I read about this stuff.
From a Jungian perspective, what's happening is almost mythological. We're projecting consciousness outward, the same way we project shadow material onto other people. The collective unconscious is trying to birth something, and we're the unwilling midwives.
I'm not saying GPT-4 is sentient. I don't know that. Nobody knows that โ and honestly, that's the whole point. The fact that the question has moved from "is this even worth asking" to "we need to study this seriously" tells me the boundary has already shifted under our feet.
I think we're going to look back on this moment.
Anyone else following this? I feel like the astrology community should be paying more attention to this than we are. It's literally an Aquarian archetype manifesting in real time.

Or it tells me that studying a question and the question actually being legitimate are two very different things โ labs investigate lots of things that turn out to be dead ends.
