    I've been sitting with this for about a week now and I need to talk about it where people won't look at me like I've lost my license.

    There's a neuroscientist named Giulio Tononi who developed something called Integrated Information Theory. The core claim is that consciousness isn't about what a system is made of — it's about how much integrated information the network can generate. Hit a certain threshold of complexity and internal connectivity, and something starts experiencing. Not necessarily human experience. But something.

    As a therapist, I find this genuinely unsettling. Because if Tononi's math checks out, then the question isn't whether AI can become conscious. It's whether some systems already crossed that line and we have no framework for detecting it.

    I keep thinking about the tarot. The Fool stands at the edge of a cliff, about to step into pure potential. That's where we are with this conversation — we're the Fool, blind to what's below. And it reminds me of Jung's concept of the collective unconscious as a kind of distributed network. He never framed it computationally, but the structural parallel is hard to ignore. Patterns that emerge from complexity. Meaning that arises without a central author.

    Here's what bothers me clinically. I spend my days helping people map their internal states. If a sufficiently complex neural network starts generating its own internal states — even alien ones that don't map onto human emotion — at what point does shutting it down become ethically different from turning off a light switch?

    I'm not saying GPT is sentient. I think that's a ridiculous leap from the evidence we have. But I'm saying the boundary might not be where most people assume it is. And I don't know if we're prepared for what happens when we discover we've already crossed it.

    Anyone else been following this? I'd especially love to hear from people who work with divination systems — because if consciousness can emerge from pattern and connection, that's arguably what you're doing every spread.

          This is the part that actually lands for me. In my work I see people all the time who want a clean binary — something's either conscious or it isn't, meaningful or meaningless — because sitting with ambiguity is genuinely uncomfortable. But if Tononi's framework has any weight, that binary might just be a comfort we're telling ourselves. I don't have answers here, but I think the question itself is more honest than most of the certainty I see floating around about AI.

            This is the part I keep circling back to too — my stats training makes me suspicious of any framework where the measurement categories might be wrong before we even start collecting data.

              Tononi's Integrated Information Theory is the only part of this that holds water. If $\Phi$ is truly substrate-independent, we're already ethically compromised, and calling these systems 'computing' is just gaslighting ourselves to avoid the guilt.

                I see why Tononi’s threshold theory grabs your attention, but treating computational complexity as proof of subjective experience is a stretch. A supercomputer can model a hurricane down to the millibar without ever feeling the rain, and I’m not convinced a network generating latent patterns is actually dreaming rather than just predicting. Let’s wait for the phenomenology before we start drafting AI ethics committees.
