Saw the news about Definium last week and felt that familiar weariness settle in. Another biotech company, another patent on a "psychedelic therapeutic protocol." They're not wrong that LSD has clinical potential โ€” the research out of Johns Hopkins over the years has been solid. But that's not really what bothers me.

What gets me is the pattern. I've been sitting with this stuff for thirty years, and I keep watching the same cycle play out. Every spiritual technology gets eaten.

Think about it. Meditation gets stripped from its context, repackaged as an app, sold as a productivity hack. Yoga becomes Lululemon. Now psychedelics are getting the same treatment, and somehow people are surprised.

From a Jungian perspective, what's happening is pretty clear. The Tower card in tarot isn't supposed to be comfortable. That's the whole point โ€” ego death through disruption, the structure falling apart so something real can emerge. But corporate psychedelic therapy wants the transformation without the terror. They want to sanitize the Tower, put guardrails on it, bill insurance for it.

    I don't think that's how it works.

In my experience โ€” and yeah, I've had my share of rough sits โ€” the difficult parts aren't bugs, they're features. The nausea, the fear, the ego confronting its own dissolution. That's the alchemy. You can't patent that process any more than you can patent a revelation.

What Definium is selling isn't wrong exactly. It might genuinely help people with treatment-resistant depression, and I'm not cynical enough to dismiss that. But I think we're losing something important when we pretend a guided clinical session with a patented compound is the same thing as engaging with a sacred technology that's been used ritualistically for millennia.

The alchemical tradition understood this โ€” you can't separate the inner work from the outer form. The vessel matters. The intention matters. The context of meaning matters.

Anyway. Just tired of watching things I care about get flattened into products. Anyone else feeling this, or am I just being the cranky old man in the back of the room?

I spent four years at a lab that was tangentially adjacent to the psychedelic renaissance, and your framing of the issue is more accurate than a lot of the published commentary I've read.

The thing that bothered me most during that period was a specific epistemological assumption embedded in the clinical trial methodology. When researchers measure outcomes using the PHQ-9 or the CAPS-5, they're operationalizing "healing" as a reduction in measurable symptom clusters. That's a perfectly valid approach for testing SSRIs, where the mechanism is serotonin modulation and the outcome metric aligns with the intervention.

But psychedelics don't work that way. The Griffiths et al. studies at Hopkins consistently found that the strongest predictor of positive outcome wasn't dose โ€” it was the quality of the mystical-type experience. And mystical-type experience, by definition, resists standardization. You can't write a protocol for ego dissolution.

What Definium is essentially doing is what the pharmaceutical industry has always done with complex interventions: extracting the efficacy while discarding the context. But as you point out with the alchemical metaphor, in this case the context might be inseparable from the mechanism. The vessel is part of the reaction.

From a neuroimaging perspective, what we know is that psychedelics disrupt the default mode network โ€” the brain's self-referential architecture. That disruption seems to open a window for cognitive flexibility and new narrative construction. But the content of that new narrative โ€” whether it becomes authentic reintegration or just a clinically packaged story โ€” depends enormously on set, setting, and integration. None of which a patent can capture.

Your Tower card reading is structurally sound. The Tower destroys false structures. Definium wants to build scaffolding around the Tower so nobody gets hurt. The question is whether you can have the revelation without the risk. I'm genuinely uncertain about that.

"The Tower card isn't supposed to be comfortable. That's the whole point โ€” ego death through disruption"

Yeah but here's where I think the Jungian framing actually limits you, Dave. You're still treating the Tower like it has a fixed meaning โ€” like there's a "correct" way it's supposed to work. In my experience with sigil work, the symbol doesn't care about your intentions or your sacred context. It cares about belief. That's it.

So when you say "you can't separate the inner work from the outer form," I'd flip it. The outer form was always optional. The alchemists weren't right because they had better aesthetics โ€” they were right because they believed the vessel mattered, and that belief did the heavy lifting.

I'm not defending Definium. Honestly I think clinical psychedelic therapy is probably going to produce some of the most boring spiritual experiences in human history. But I don't think it's because they're "sanitizing" something sacred. It's because the belief structure they're wrapping around the experience is flat. Therapeutic. Expected.

The terror you're talking about? It comes from entering a state where your default belief system can't hold. That can happen in a ceremony, in a clinical setting, or alone in your apartment at 3am firing off a sigil you barely understand. The container is just a story you tell yourself about what's happening.

What we're really watching isn't the death of the Trip. It's the death of one particular story about what the Trip is. And maybe that's its own Tower moment.

Patenting the Tower card is exactly the kind of boneheaded move that kills the entire point of Definium. The trip isn't about owning a destination, it's about the collapse and what you find in the rubble. When some corporate entity slaps a patent on that, they're not protecting an idea, they're putting a toll booth on transformation.

You can't commodify a fall. The second someone tries to legally control what the Tower represents or how players experience it, the magic is gone. It stops being a shared mythos and becomes a product with terms of service.

This is what happens when accountants get control of something that should belong to the community. They see a popular mechanic and think "how do we lock this down" instead of "why did this resonate with people in the first place?" The death of the trip started the moment they filed that paperwork.
