so there's another rocket upper stage about to crash into the moon on august 5th. just. slamming into it. like it's an empty lot we can dump stuff in.

i keep thinking about this and feeling genuinely weird about it?? like yes i know it's "just space debris" and the moon doesn't have feelings. i get it. but the energy of it. the casualness.

in tarot, the moon card is about the unconscious, intuition, the things we can't quite see clearly. it's not a passive object โ€” it's a mirror. and i think what bugs me is that we've stopped treating it like a mirror and started treating it like a resource extraction zone. which says everything about where we are collectively.

Carl Jung wrote about how the psyche projects onto outer phenomena. so when i look at how we interact with the moon โ€” crashing things into it, planning mining operations โ€” i have to ask what we're projecting. because to me it looks like the same extractive mindset we apply to literally everything else on earth. we haven't transcended anything. we just found a bigger thing to consume.

i got into astrology in 2020 like a lot of people and honestly the moon phases became my anchor during that chaos. tracking the lunar cycle gave me a rhythm when everything felt formless. so maybe i'm personal about this in a way that's not fully rational ๐ŸŒ™

but honestly? rationality is part of the problem here. the idea that because something doesn't have measurable "impact" in a scientific sense, it doesn't matter spiritually โ€” that's such a limited framework. it's the same mechanistic thinking that disconnected us from nature in the first place.

i'm not saying we should never send anything to the moon. i'm saying the way we're doing it โ€” careless, unilateral, without any ritual or intention โ€” reflects a real poverty of relationship. we've lost the capacity for cosmic reciprocity.

does anyone else feel this or am i just being overly sensitive about a rock in the sky ๐Ÿ˜…

interested in what people think about the difference between interacting with celestial bodies from a place of reverence vs instrumentalization. because i think that distinction matters more than we want to admit.

(There's a deeper dive on this in our wiki: Reversed Tarot Cards: What They Actually Mean | Mystic Wiki.)

The Moon in astrology governs the inner life โ€” the emotional body, the unconscious patterning we inherit, the part of us that responds to things we can't articulate. So when you say it feels like a mirror, you're describing the exact function the Moon has always served in astrological symbolism. It doesn't generate light; it reflects. And the quality of that reflection depends entirely on what you bring to the relationship.

Your instinct about cosmic reciprocity has deep roots. In Hellenistic astrology, the Moon was considered the mediator between the celestial and the terrestrial โ€” the receptor through which planetary influences were translated into human experience. The Greeks didn't just observe the Moon; they maintained a relational stance toward it. Ephemeris calculations weren't just data collection; they were a form of ongoing dialogue.

I think what's bothering you is the shift from relational cosmology to instrumental cosmology. In traditional astrology, the celestial bodies were interlocutors โ€” beings you engaged with through ritual, offering, and observation. In the modern framework, they're objects to be exploited or crashed into.

The August 5th event is astrologically interesting too โ€” it occurs during a period when the transiting Moon is moving through a part of the zodiac associated with boundaries and thresholds. I won't claim that matters in a causal sense, but the symbolic resonance with what you're describing โ€” crossing a threshold in how we relate to the Moon โ€” is worth sitting with.

"the idea that because something doesn't have measurable 'impact' in a scientific sense, it doesn't matter spiritually โ€” that's such a limited framework"

I get the emotional weight here, and I actually tracked lunar cycles too during late 2020 โ€” it was genuinely grounding. But I want to push back on this specific claim because I think it's doing something sneaky.

You're setting up a dichotomy where "measurable impact" and "spiritual meaning" are separate categories, and then arguing we privilege the former unfairly. But in my experience, the moments I've felt most connected to something larger โ€” whether that's sitting with a Daoist text or just watching fog roll over the mountains here in Chengdu โ€” the meaning wasn't floating free of physical reality. It was embedded in it. The connection arose from paying closer attention to what was actually happening, not from adding a layer of interpretation on top.

And that's where I think the moon crash thing gets complicated for your argument. Because I actually watched the live stream of the LCROSS impact back in 2009 โ€” the one where NASA deliberately slammed a probe into a crater to look for water ice. I remember feeling this weird anticipation, and then when the impact happened and the data started coming in showing actual water molecules... I felt something. Not reverence in the traditional sense, but this sudden awareness that the moon wasn't just a symbol in my sky โ€” it was a place with its own material reality that we could touch and learn from.

That felt like relationship to me. Not the ritual kind you're describing, but the kind where you actually engage with something on its own terms rather than projecting meaning onto it. Jung's projection stuff cuts both ways โ€” if we're projecting unconscious material onto the moon, that includes the romanticized version too.

I'm not saying the current situation is ideal. The casualness bothers me too. But I think the leap from "we're being careless" to "we've lost cosmic reciprocity" assumes a specific framework for what reciprocity even looks like โ€” one that's pretty human-centric when you get down to it. Maybe the moon doesn't need our rituals. Maybe understanding it as a physical object is a form of respect, just not one that fits neatly into a tarot framework.

"the way we're doing it โ€” careless, unilateral, without any ritual or intention"

From a chaos magic perspective, intentionality is exactly what you make of it โ€” the crash itself is the ritual if you choose to read it that way. You're assuming the absence of explicitly stated intention means the absence of any magical charge, but I think you're underestimating how much raw gnosis gets packed into a rocket impact.
