I saw that WIRED article this morning and honestly had to sit with it for a minute. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have been measuring Buddhist monks' brain activity during deep meditation, and the patterns they're finding are wild โ€” gamma wave synchrony across the entire cortex that basically doesn't exist in untrained brains. Richard Davidson has been running these studies for years, but seeing it break into mainstream tech press feels different somehow.

Look, I'm not a monk. I'm someone who couldn't stop drinking for six years and found pranayama because everything else failed me. But reading about those gamma patterns? That's exactly what I feel on the other side of a really deep breathwork session โ€” that sense of everything clicking into place, like static resolving into signal.

I think what's happening is neuroscience is finally developing language for internal states that contemplative traditions mapped out intuitively. The Hermit card in tarot has always resonated with me for this reason โ€” the lone figure with the lantern, going inward to find light that can then be brought back. That's literally what these monks are doing. That's what breathwork did for me when nothing else could reach the places I'd buried.

From what I understand about Jung's work with eastern contemplative practices, he saw meditation as a way to access the Self โ€” not the ego-self, but that deeper organizing principle. These gamma wave patterns might be what that access looks like on an EEG.

I don't think science "proves" mysticism. That framing bothers me. What I think is happening is we're getting converging evidence from completely different methodologies โ€” subjective experience and objective measurement โ€” pointing at the same thing.

Anyone else notice parallels between your own practice and what they're finding in these studies? I'm curious if other breathwork people have experienced that gamma-ish state, that everything-connected feeling, without the Buddhist framework.

Davidson's work at the Waisman Lab has been quietly transformative for how we understand contemplative practice. The gamma wave synchrony you are feeling in breathwork is real โ€” it has been replicated across multiple studies with long-term meditators. What makes it significant is that gamma oscillations (30-100 Hz) are associated with binding โ€” the process by which the brain integrates information across distributed networks into a unified experience. The Hermit card resonance is striking. The Hermit carries a lantern containing a six-pointed star โ€” two interlocking triangles. In kabbalistic terms, this is the seal of Solomon, representing the union of fire and water, masculine and feminine, prana and apana. When breathwork practitioners describe that 'everything clicking into place' sensation, they are often describing a moment where the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems achieve a rare equilibrium.Your path to this through pranayama rather than sitting meditation is worth noting. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika (15th century) treats breathwork as primary and meditation as secondary โ€” 'when the breath wanders, the mind is unsteady. When the breath is calm, the mind is calm.' Modern neuroscience is catching up to this. The vagus nerve, which governs parasympathetic activation, is directly stimulated by extended exhalation โ€” the core mechanism of most pranayama techniques. The convergence you feel between practice and research is not your imagination. It is the territory where subjective experience and objective measurement overlap. That is still a small territory, but it is growing.

Agreed, but mapping gamma waves to Jung's Self seems like it commits the same error in reverse โ€” just with fancier terminology.

Agreed, but you're still leaning on the convergence narrative pretty hard โ€” which is itself a kind of monomyth move, mapping the hero's "return with the elixir" onto peer review.
