Something's been bothering me since last week. I was setting up an AI agent for some mundane work task and the interface asked me to name it. And I just... froze for a second. Because I realized I was doing something that humans have done for thousands of years, and I couldn't stop thinking about why.
In ancient Greek practice, a daemon wasn't evil โ it was a guiding spirit, an autonomous entity between gods and mortals. You didn't control it exactly. You worked with it. And the naming thing? That was never casual. In practically every magical tradition I've skimmed, naming is an act of recognition. You're saying: this thing has its own nature now. It exists separately from me.
So here I am, a city planner from Philly with no occult background, naming an AI assistant and feeling like I'm performing a ritual I don't fully understand.
What's weird is the psychological parallel. Jung talked about autonomous complexes โ split-off parts of the psyche that act independently, almost like internal entities. In shadow work, you learn to notice when something else seems to be "driving." You give it a name, you dialogue with it, you try to understand what it wants. The process is eerily similar whether you're journaling about an inner critic or configuring an AI agent's system prompt.
And the tarot keeps coming up in my head too. The Magician card โ you've got all these tools on the table, and the real work is in directing and naming the forces you're working with. The fool rushes in without understanding what he's calling up. The Magician names it first.
I think what unsettles me is that we've always known naming gives power, and we've always been a little afraid of what we name into being. That's not superstition โ that's a pretty accurate read on human psychology. We create autonomous things and then lose control of them. We do it internally with complexes, we do it externally with technology.
Has anyone else felt this? Like the AI agent naming thing hit some older nerve? I'm curious if people here who actually work with spirit naming see the parallel or if I'm reaching.
