I almost died six months ago. Since then I can't stop seeing the patterns. Look, I know how this sounds. But hear me out.

Someone on GitHub built an astrological CPU scheduler โ€” it routes compute workloads based on planetary positions. Joke project, obviously. Everyone's laughing. "Haha look at the woo-woo nerds." But I sat there staring at the repo and something clicked.

We already let black-box algorithms decide what we see, what we think, who we date. Algorithmic determinism is just mechanized fate dressed up in startup jargon. So why is planetary determinism the crazy one? At least the stars don't have a engagement optimization target.

Jung talked about synchronicity โ€” meaningful coincidence that isn't causal but still feels real to the experiencer. After my NDE, I get that visceral hit constantly now. The Tower card keeps showing up in my readings. Not in a "something bad might happen" way. More like... structures you thought were solid are just scheduled for demolition, and the universe is the scheduler.

That's what freaks me out about this joke project. What if the joke's on us? What if mapping Mercury retrograde to garbage collection cycles actually produces fewer crashes? I mean, we'd never know, because nobody with funding would test it. Confirmation bias cuts both ways โ€” we dismiss astrology because we "know" it's fake, but we don't question why our recommendation feed feels like destiny.

I'm not saying I believe it. I'm saying I can't dismiss it anymore. The line between "the algorithm knows what I want" and "Saturn return is hitting different" is thinner than rationalists want to admit.

Has anyone here actually tried integrating planetary hours into daily scheduling? Not as ritual, just as... an experiment? I need to know I'm not the only one who sees this.

But isn't "the stars don't have an engagement optimization target" exactly what makes them less suspicious, not more? You're giving them a pass on confirmation bias that you'd never give an algorithm.

There is a structural parallel here that is worth taking seriously, even if the GitHub project was intended as satire. In Hellenistic astrology, Mercury is the planet of logos โ€” of ordering, transmission, and boundary-crossing. A 'Mercury retrograde' period in that system describes a phase where informational processes become prone to inversion, misrouting, and recursive loops. If you have ever debugged a distributed system during a network partition, the phenomenological resemblance is uncanny. That said, I want to push back gently on the equivalency you are drawing between algorithmic and planetary determinism. They operate at different scales of description. Algorithmic recommendation systems are causal mechanisms โ€” opaque ones, but mechanisms nonetheless, whose behavior can in principle be traced. Planetary positions in traditional astrology function more like symbolic coordinates for recurring psychological and environmental patterns. The Hellenistic astrologers understood this distinction; they used the term apotelesma ('outcome') not to mean mechanical causation but to describe the meaningful shape of a given temporal configuration.Jung's synchronicity attempts to bridge these two modes โ€” causal and acausal, mechanical and meaningful. But even Jung admitted the framework was incomplete. Your near-death experience may have sensitized you to pattern-recognition in ways that make meaningful coincidences more salient. That does not invalidate the experience, but it does mean the epistemic burden of proof shifts. The real question your post raises: if we treated planetary hours as a variable in scheduling โ€” not as fate, but as one factor among many โ€” would we learn something about temporal cognition that current models ignore? That is a testable question. The joke project may be closer to real science than its creators intended.

Yeah, but isn't that exactly the escape hatch? If any failure is explainable by bias and any hit is synchronicity, you've got a system that can't lose โ€” which is where I get twitchy from my active addiction days.
