Saw a video hit 228 points on HN earlier — "Don't Take the Black Pill." The comments section is what actually stopped me mid-scroll. Raw, unfiltered despair. Not even edgy despair at this point. Just... flat. People describing the future like a completed program that already returned null.

I've been sitting with this for a few hours now.

From a Jungian perspective, what I'm seeing isn't really clinical depression in the traditional sense — it's a collective shadow integration failure. The ego-structure of modernity (progress, linear improvement, meritocratic reward loops) has collided with reality, and instead of assimilating that collapse, people are identifying with the void itself. That's the black pill. It's not nihilism. Nihilism at least has energy. This is something more like psychic freeze.

What gets me is the collective nature of it now. When I started Zen practice eight years ago, existential dread felt personal — my private malfunction. Now it's infrastructure. It's in the comment sections, the group chats, the group meditation sits where half the room looks like they're processing a grief they can't name.

In tarot, The Tower isn't punishment. It's what happens when a false structure can't hold anymore. Lightning strikes, the crown falls, and you're left with whatever was actually real underneath all that scaffolding. My read on the current moment? We're in the falling debris phase collectively, and nobody gave us a framework for what comes after the crown hits the ground.

I think the old maps don't work anymore. Not religion, not rationalism, not hustle-culture optimisim, not even a lot of the "just meditate bro" wellness stuff. The despair I'm reading in that thread isn't spiritual immaturity. It's a legitimate response to collapsed meaning structures.

What I'm trying to figure out — and why I'm posting this here — is whether we need entirely new frameworks or if we just need to get better at sitting in the rubble. I've been experimenting with combining breathwork protocols with koan practice, treating the physiological dysregulation and the existential layer simultaneously. Results are mixed but interesting.

Anyone else processing this? Not looking for solutions necessarily. Just curious if the weight feels as distributed as it looks from my end.

"instead of assimilating that collapse, people are identifying with the void itself"

I think you're overcomplicating it. In my monastery days, Dōgen would've just called this the suffering of having preferences about how reality should be. The "framework" you're looking for is just sitting still until the preference exhausts itself.

What you observe — collective existential despair that is more like psychic freeze than active nihilism — has a direct correlate in the Buddhist concept of thaṃs pa, a kind of dullness or lethargy that is one of the five hindrances to meditation. It is not the same as sorrow. Sorrow has energy, has direction. Thaṃs pa is the mind’s response to meaninglessness so pervasive it cannot even generate the effort to reject it.

Your observation that this has shifted from personal to infrastructure is acute. In Buddhist cosmology, the collective karma of an era manifests as the mental atmosphere its inhabitants breathe. When the shared narrative structures — progress, meritocracy, linear improvement — collapse, what remains is not freedom. It is the groundlessness the Heart Sutra describes, but experienced without the meditative training to sit with it.

The Tower, as you note, is not punishment. In the Dhammapada, the Buddha says: "By oneself alone is evil done; by oneself alone is one defiled." The structure that collapses in The Tower was always built by the ego. The rubble is what remains when you stop performing.

Your experiment combining breathwork with koan practice addresses both upaya (skillful means for the body) and prajña (wisdom for the mind) simultaneously. The Buddha taught that the path requires both. Breathwork without insight becomes calm numbness. Koans without somatic grounding become intellectual games. Keep experimenting with that combination.

"The real Tower experience is the quiet part before—the sick feeling when you know the foundation is false and you're the only one who seems to hear the cracks."

This is what I keep coming back to from my own posts, and it's why your framing here lands for me. The HN thread you're describing sounds like what happens when people have been sitting in that quiet pre-Tower phase for so long that the collapse itself feels like a relief — except it's not, because there's no integration happening. Just flat identification with the void.

I think the question you're asking about new frameworks vs. sitting in rubble is the right one, but I'd push back slightly on the premise. From what I've seen in my meditation group — and I'm relatively new to all this, three years in, coming from a totally secular background — the problem isn't that the old maps don't work. It's that people skipped the part where you actually learn to read any map. They went straight from "progress narrative is failing me" to "nothing means anything" without ever developing the capacity to sit with uncertainty as a state rather than a conclusion.

That said, I'm genuinely curious about your breathwork plus koan experiment. What does "mixed but interesting" look like specifically? I've been playing with somatic approaches to inner child work and I keep bumping into this wall where the physiological regulation seems to either bypass the existential layer entirely or trigger it without any container. Are you finding the koan piece actually holds space for the dysregulation, or is it more like two parallel tracks?
